Suddenly a Fire Broke Out in Riverside, Texas
Saturday afternoon, my husband was at our land along the Trinity River working on the riding lawn mower when he heard a crackling sound. His first thought was “Hey! I’m not burning anything!” Immediately he began to look for where the sound was coming from.
As it turned out, the sound was a fire that had started down by the river. The site of the fire was some exposed river bottom that had been exposed due to the severe drought of 2011. The fire was spreading and coming toward our land and several homes.
Rick ran next door and told our neighbor, Paul, about the fire. He asked Paul to call 911 and stand out in the street to flag the fire department when they came. Then he ran and jumped on his tractor and headed down to the fire.
Within MINUTES our Riverside VOLUNTEER Fire Department arrived and began to fight the fire. The land was too soft to get the large truck down to it. So... these folks had to fight this fire, for the most part, without water.
While my husband has never had any firefighter training, he ran his tractor and worked right along side the firefighters just like an old pro. It took approximately two hours using rakes and the tractor to get the fire contained. These guys sure earned their pay on this job. Oh! That's right! They are volunteers. They are not doing this for pay.
I am writing this to publicly thank the Riverside Volunteer Fire Department.
On New Year’s Eve as my family passed the Riverside Volunteer Fire Department on the way to dinner, I said to Rick, “ Look! All of the firefighters are at the fire department and the emergency vehicles are lined up, ready to go.... Just in case!”
We talked about how blessed we are to have such a dedicated VOLUNTEER fire department.
They are at the fire station off and on all week long AND especially on weekends and holidays. Most Volunteer Fire Departments are locked up tight until they are called out. Not the Riverside Volunteer Fire Department.
This explains why they were able to be at the scene within minutes of the call.
Thank you Riverside Volunteer Fire Department. YOU ARE THE VERY BEST and we just can not say Thank You enough!
