What a vast area to discover! Did you know that Texas covers 261,797 square miles? It has 254 counties and a population of 23.5 million people. The population of Texas from 2005 to 2006 grew over 579,000 people! The largest population growth of any of the other state. Rockwell County grew the fastest of any county in the United States! It grew 7 times faster than the national average of 1.1 percent. It grew 7.9 percent. The city of Hutto Texas has grown over 580 percent since 1990! But according to the Texas A&M Real Estate Center the growth may be slowing down. For example: Williamson County's population increased at an annualized rate of 7.1 percent from 2000 to 2002 compared with 7.9 percent in the 1990s. One of the state's largest counties, Travis County, posted the most marked change in annualized rate of growth, declining from 4.1 percent in the 1990s to 2.1 percent from 2000-2002.
One will find that the geography of Texas spans a wide range of features. The Great Plains, the Rio Grande, Red River and Sabine River all provide natural state lines where Texas borders Oklahoma on the north, Louisiana and Arkansas on the east, New Mexico on the west, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the south.
Most residents, divide Texas into 5 regions North, East, Central, South, and West. But the Texas Almanac divides Texas into four physical regions: Gulf Coastal Plains, Interior Lowlands, Great Plains, and The Basin and Range Province."
Texas has a gross state product of $1.09 trillion. Although Texas has some of the largest ranches in the world and the romantic folklore of some of these ranches are as large as the state itself. Contrary to popular belief ranching never was Texas main industry. Back before the great oil boom..Cotton was the main industry. To this day it still is one of the major industrys. The United States is the third largest producer of cotton in the world. But within the United States, and in Texas the South Plains is the largest contigous producer of cotton in the world! Other industrys are of course the cattle industry, Oil, High Technology, Bio Medical, and Aerospace and many others. Texas has a total of 56 companys in the Fortune 500 2nd only to New York who boast a total of 57.
There is an abundance of trees, deserts, mountains, beaches, and lakes. There's the Gulf of Mexico, 3, 700 streams, 15 major rivers, 166 lakes and over 30,000 Playa lakes in the state of Texas. There are 5 National Forest and 5 State Forest in the state of Texas. If your a nature lover there are more than 100 State controlled parks that cover over 600,000 acres of land!
