I've often said that Facebook should be thought of similarly to a loaded gun. It's all about the user and what they intend to do with that gun that poses a problem or not. So with Facebook, how we choose to portray ourselves should be viewed similarly.
If you are trying to show the FB community that you are a dedicated professional, then you should be careful of what you say, what conversations you participate in & who you add as your "friends."
I've told people since the day I set up an account on Facebook that we should view adding "friends" along the lines of "Would you trust this person in your living room with your family?" We put our children's pictures, our grandchildren's pictures, our spouses, our friends & all our moments in life online for everyone we have befriended to view.
It's a semi-open forum for anyone, even those with a not so pleasant demeanor. So along with being careful as to whom you ADD, be mindful of your settings. You never know when that ONE PERSON from our past who MAY be holding a grudge about something we did or didn't do, may pop up and post some not-so-savory comments about us.
