Home Winterization Check List.
•1. Make sure furnace is in working order and clean/change filters.
•2. Check the outside of your home for any cold air entry points. Check for cracks in the foundation and make sure it is sealed where pipes go into the home.
•3. Check windows and doors for gaps when closed. Apply new weather stripping if necessary.
•4. Inspect roof; make sure there aren't any missing shingles or places for water to leak in.
•5. Clean and inspect gutters and down spouts. When the snow melts you don't want water left on your walkways to freeze due to clogged gutters.
•6. Buy ice/snow melt.
•7. Clean and put away all summer yard equipment. Clean and store gardening equipment and drain the gas from your lawn mower.
•8. Make sure all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. Purchase and install smoke detectors if you don't have them in every bedroom.
•9. Drain swamp cooler water line.
•10. Winterize sprinklers by draining water out of the line; you don't want any pipes freezing.
•11. Have your fireplace inspected and cleaned. Make sure there are no gaps between the bricks in the fireplace, flames find a way through those cracks and can catch your wall on fire. Check flue to make sure it is clear (no birds' nests, etc.).
