Real Estate and The Lake Powell Pipeline Part 1

**********************************

What will it mean for the housing industry if the proposed 120 mile pipeline to carry water from Lake Powell to Saint George, Utah gets built?

I asked myself this today as I was driving around Big Water, looking at Lake Powell and decided to stop in at our town hall. Posted on the desk was a notice of an upcoming meeting on the pipeline. Yes, posted on the desk. We don't have what you would call a newspaper for Big Water, Utah. There is a once a week paper in Page, Arizona called the Lake Powell Chronicle, but their coverage of Big Water can be spotty as it is 17 miles away and in a different state. The other paper, The Southern Utah News, is based in Kanab, 60 miles away, and yes, their coverage of Big Water is also spotty.

So as I stood there at the desk in town hall reading the missive from the Utah Department of Natural Resources about the upcoming Town Hall meeting, many things were going through my mind.

  • What effect on Big Water and Kane County will the building of a 120 mile pipeline, 66 inches in diameter have?
  • Will it create any long term jobs?
  • How much uproar is going to be in the media over the pipeline?
  • Kane County would see a water allotment out of the pipeline, but would Eastern Kane County - Big Water to Paria, benefit at all?
  • On a broader scope, does Saint George need the water?
  • The effect on the growth of Saint George would appear to be phenomenal.

This is the beginning of the thoughts and questions and the first in what promises to be a series of blogs on the pipeline.
