It is hard to imagine the courage it took to get into a sailplane in 1933 and take off from this mountain.
After 4 hours and 50 minutes landing in Frederick Maryland, 121.6 miles away...
When you stop on Afton Mountain and look at the view you will be in awe. But to launch from here, even with today's technology takes real guts!!! (just my opinion)

I have found that taking photos of markers is a great way to keep your photos in check when it comes time to download them, and you can remember the story. Can't imagine the adrenaline going through the guy as he took off.
Wow! That is quite a feat even with today's technology. You are right about the guts part, one wrong turn and into the trees or even worse...
Charles, how interesting. I love this type of local information. We use to fly sail planes in Fremont and it is a wonderous adventure. My husband still longs for it, however he did let his sail plane license expire.
What an incredible picture! I don't think I would have taken the plunge off that rock. GBU!
Charles, a 121.6 miles a way. WOW, that must be a great feeling to float for that long.
