Power Outage in Charlottesville

POWER is Back on and we are very happy!

Yesterday we had high winds in our area (gusts at 70mph) and several trees were down. Early in the after noon our power went out. This is not normal for our area....

This morning (still no power) we got the kids to school and drove to town to get supplies (and coffee).

This was the first thing we saw:

Well this was on Garth Road and we were a little concerned that it would be forever before the power came back on! We went to town and did our errands and on the way back we saw (about an hour later):

The crews were hard at work!

getting closer to our home we got the all clear sign from the road crew!

After getting back home we unpacked the car and within 30 minutes our power was back on!

We have great crews here in Virginia!!!

Charles...I wish you could have seen Lake Anna yesterday.  It was rockin and rollin.  What waves.  It looked like the ocean.

Thought of taking some pictures but never got down to the dock.  I figured I would really need to get down low to the ground to get the right effect.  From up at the house the photo probably would have flattened out the waves.  Shoulda, shoulda!

Kathleen

P.S.  Yes, great crews...and thank goodness we don't need them more often.

KATHLEEN - you were wise to stay inside!

Oh My Goodness Charles...

I go nuts when the power goes out.

So nuts in fact that I am now armed with a huge generator and an air card.

Says a lot about me. Yes? :)

Glad you didn't have to go too long without power. It's hard to go without power when there's little ones around.

We once went two weeks without power. If there had been children around they probably would have driven me nuts :)

TLW...ROAR!

TLW - 2 weeks would drive anyone nuts!

We actually had a great time. Fire in the fireplace, Smoors, Volley ball game (with a balloon) in the family room, flashlights and just goo old family time (like a camp-out)!

Charles, that first picture is scary!! I never mind power outages because of the very things you list. "family time". When my boys were young I was the Mom that stayed home and so I would have several other kiddos to entertain. Nothing like making breakfast for 7 on the BBQ :)

That really is a speedy recovery time frame.  I had something similiar and I thought is was going to take a few hours, but it was only and hour or so.

J.

JO - that is so true!

JEFF - amazing!

NAOMA - it was a wild wind!

I lose my mind when I don't have power.  Seriously.  I would pack up and drive somewhere that power was on.  Am I spoiled or what??

Awesome pictures there!

All I have to say is that I hope the dogwoods didn't get hurt!  Those dogwoods are old and precious.

John H.

KRIS - It is a lot more fun with kids who like to camp!

JOHN - Mine look fine!

Charles, I'm so glad you're okay. What on earth is going on? No global warming...? Whatever. Please take care and stay out of trouble! Later in the rain, Deb

Wow Charles!  I would have been going through withdrawal if I had to drive to town to get coffee!  Yikes!  My coffee is like a transfusion - even before my eyes are open!  Glad you got all restored and nothing worse was in the works.

Charles - Sounds like your power company is really on top of things.

DEBRA - Just a little breeze :-)

CAROL - Back in the saddle so to speak!

CANDY - We have good people here in VA!

Wow Charles, That was some nasty wind!  Glad to hear your power got restored so fast!

Charles, we had bad winds, too, and I get to replace a roof on a rent house as a consequence.  But that is much better than the tornados that we also had.  Very nice pictures.

Charles, it always amazes me when the power company can get something like this fixed so quickly!  I would look at that job and be totally overwhelmed... They deserve a raise...but certainly not at our expense... Glad you didn't forget the coffee!

Charles I hoe you have a generator.. I was so afraid to lose power back north in the dead of winter! We lost it for 2 days one October and I froze..

Fortunately the only bad thing when we loose power is not keeping the food cold.  Otherwise we get by ok in the tropical climate.

ROBERTA - We are lucky!

BARBARA - that is bad...

DON - the teams are great here!

GINGER - no generator.... of course now we are rethinking that again...

RANDY - ICE!!!

Charles,

We had the same nasty winds here.  I live in an older home and boy could you hear that wind howl.  We were fortunate that at least our power stayed on.  Saw a lot of branches on the road, though.  One good thing about blackouts, you get to spend quality time with your family.  Just think, enjoying family life like they did before electricity.

Glad to hear your power is back on, again!

BRIGITA - Yes we felt like it was 100 years ago!

Charles - glad you are back up and running!

B and B - we are all clear!!

I live in Keswick on Central VA coop and the power goes out frequently when squirrels short out transformers - takes about 3 hours for it to come back on * 5 years ago we got a WHOLE HOUSE generator - 10 seconds without power and it powers up - it runs on propane from tank buried in the yard, starts itself 10min each week and works like a charm.....hassles are re-setting digital clocks and satellite....I LOVE IT!!!

Oh how we take electricity for granted until you don't have any.

W - that is excellent and easy!!!

KIM - that is so true!

It is very wrong when you can have winds faster than you can drive in an area. Clearly Mother Nature didn't feel it had to obey the speed signs! Glad everything is getting back to normal and no one was hurt!
