Realtors - Do Some Of Us Expect Something For Nothing?

Realtors - Do Some Of Us Expect Something For Nothing?

I have a dog. Sometimes I think I have trained him; sometimes I think it is the other way around.

My Dog Jack Fredericksburg Virgina He Wants To Be A RealtorAs you can see, he lives a very hard life. Anyway, as I was working around the house today, and as I fed him what seemed like his 42nd snack of the day, it got me to thinking. When he does something good, I give him a treat. That comes from training. I get that. But lately it seems like when he comes in from outside, he expects a treat. When I get up in the morning, it seems that in his mind he has accomplished something, and he expects a treat. Sometimes, when I merely wander into the room, I can see him eyeing the treat jar.

Have we, as realtors, become like my dog. Do we expect a treat just because we take the listing? When I search the MRIS and I see a listing with no pictures, I think of my dog. When I show a home, and there is no sign or no brochures, or the brochure box in the yard is empty, I think of my dog. When I call a realtor to inquire about a listing and 2 days later I have not gotten a return call, I think about my dog.

When we take the listing, we agree to do certain things, one being "to agressively market the home". When we fail to do that, yet keep the listing active and in our name, are we any better than my dog?

To those who do the bare minimum and still expect to be paid, I say - "No Treat For You !"

Well, I do believe that some realtors have become complacent because of the "good times".  But, times are 'a changing.

Kevin, to be honest, while some Realtors sometimes do less than they should or could...they are still managed by the income that the SELLER provides at closing.  I'm guessing that the something-for-nothings are going to find an empty treat jar often enough to decide that maybe, "real estate isn't the right choice for a job"...

Laurie,  It gives continued credibility to the 80/20 rule, (maybe 90/10 nowadays).

I think you hit the nail on the head! I predict we will lose 20% of the 1.3 million members of NAR by 2009, if not sooner.

It will make for a better world.

I am just hoping the changing market will weed out the ones who just do NOT need to be in this profession ! Today, is just a bad day for me to comment seeings how I was suppose to meet a Realtor on what had to be a co-show, her rules and SHE didn't show up ! Errrr

Kevin, It is hard to get a lazy dog off his bed for a snack if he just ate. If that same dog hasn't eaten for 12 hours, it is highly likely he will do amazing tricks for the smallest of snack. Turn the hours into months for a Realtor, and you will find after many months of little or no commissions that same lazy Realtor will help the sellers move to get the house sold for their commission check. Time spent in a bad market make great agents.

Damm Kevin,

I was going to ask for a treat but, not from you.  Good point though.  We see this day in and day out, I've even seen a few blogs about these types of agents.   I think the tide is going to change with these types of realtors - I think the consumers are getting smarter and are not going to stand for this type of behavior.

Great posting and a great picture of that lazy dog of yours.

Keep up the good work
