Today my family and I took a little hike and during the hike decided it was time to do a little gardening.
So when we got back home we got right to work. Well it was not long before I heard a SCREAM!!!
SNAKE!!!
I came running with a shovel (to cut his head off) thinking it was a copperhead. I was pleased to see it was a nice little 3 foot Black Snake,

Excuse the photos as I took them with my blackberry and not my camera...
Well my wife actually scared him and he laid there very still...

His is so cute I think he is smiling at the camera!

I let this little guy go and he is evidently living in my barn.
Note: a black snake can bite but he is good to have around to take care of mice and copperheads...
Back to gardening!

Charles - I know so little about snakes that I don't think I would have hesitated with the shovel. :)
UGH! Charles!! I know snakes are good for the environment- I even appreciate the fact that they eat mice, but I must admit, I just get the shivers looking at them!
Yuck...I am not a fan of snakes
Well, you ALMOST made me wet my pants! BUT, I was happy to hear this little friend of yours actually takes care of Copperheads, WHICH are dangerous!
Charles,
A real southern charmer...!!! :) Thanks, Fran
Charles, he's so darn cute. I'm glad he didn't meet up with your shovel. By the way, those pictures aren't bad at all for shots taken with a cell phone.
Charles, I am not a big fan of snakes but I can see the benefits of having them around...
Bejesus man, I get goose bumps looking at him. I almost poured my hot coffee on him through the screen here.
Charles- Send your friend my way! The neighbor across the street from me has found two baby copperheads in his yard this spring! We need to find a black snake someplace. Hopefully if they decide to move, they won't live to make it across the street!
Charles...good to kniow that black snakes eat copperheads...I knew they are mice. See, I klearn something new everytime I am on AR.
Cute ... I don't think so ... I would have been running for the hills!
Your blackberry takes very clear photos.
Thanks for sharing ...I think.
When I was a young child I used to keep a small grass snake in my pocket. It did keep my mother from checking what I had in there.
Hi Charles ~ Wow - I thought it was a garden ornament. Excellent photos - you're quick on the draw.
Liz
Good pics for a cell phone!!! keep up the gardening!!
Joe
He looks about 6 ft. long in the photos! Even if he is "friendly" he would have been gone, if my hubs had come along...
I had to deal with the same issue on Saturday. I just caught the snake, put it in a bag and drove a mile down the road and left it at one of the creeks. Snakes are God's creatures too...

I used to have many of these guys hanging out in my barn. Every now and then I would have to pick one up and relocate him so as not to scare my helpers. Yes - they can bite, and yes - it hurts. But they are not poisonous and are GREAT for keeping the rat/mouse population down.
Maybe you should teach your wife how to handle one of them. She wouldn't be as scared then. :)
I would have be scared too I think I would not like the sight of a black snake in my backyard. But it almost does look like its smiling for the photo shot. LOL
Have a Wonderful Monday,

I had an eighteen inch garter snake on my deck last year and I thought that was a big deal!!! (and they are harmless)----- I just saw two different emails regarding snakes I'd just as soon forget I saw------

Eweeeeeeee, snake? As my friend once said, I don't care if its name is Blue, Black, Red, Copper or Rattle, if its last name is SNAKE,. kill it! Best advice I ever heard.
