Salsa is Spicing Up Lynchburg, Virginia: Salsa Nights at Machu Picchu

If you're a college student looking for something fun to do after hours in Lynchburg, check out today's Lifestyles section in the News and Advance. You'll find a story about the dances held on Friday nights at Machu Picchu Peruvian Restaurant. Owner Elsa Duran has been wonderful about letting the students use her restaurant and the dances always draw a crowd. There is a $3 charge, no partner is required and no alcohol is served.

Last Friday night reporter Liz Barry was on hand to interview some of the dancers and teacher, Eddie Reyes. Classes start at 9pm and the dancing runs til after midnight. The Burg magazine is also running the story and a photo of my daughter Megan with her dance partner Antonio. They will be competing next Friday in a Salsa competition along with Eddie and his partner and one other couple. Machu Picchu will host a competition on April 25th.

I'm grateful to Eddie Reyes for organizing a fun, safe event for young people of Lynchburg to attend. For more information on these and future events, contact Eddie through his Facebook page - Salsa Nights.

Sounds like fun Debbie....I have 2 left feet,so probably wouldn't work out for me...LOL

I wonder if they would open up Sunday after brunch for the more mature folks? Salsa in loafers and leisure suits...on second thought the liability insurance might be a little high. <<<smile>>>

She looks so cute!

BLR Guy, I know you could do it.....there's only three steps and you get to repeat them over and over!LOL!

Rich, I think they hold those at the retirement center and they probably have a defibrillator on hand !LOL!! Love the dancers, you amaze me with the graphics you find!

Kate, she has been practicing her heart out. She didn't expect to get featured on the cover, she's happy!

Deb,

Great Blog - Megan looks great!  I wish I was in shape to go to Salsa Nights!!!!  Will they take "old people?"

Terrific - I can't do stuff like that - not well coordinated at all.  At least not my feet. I play piano and organ, but I sure can't DANCE!  Good luck to Megan and Antonio.

LOL! Kath, I can do the basic salsa but these kids are amazing. They watch dance clips and learn new routines. This old person will be taking pictures only!!!

Ruthmarie, I'm with you, the feet don't want to do what the brain is telling them! It's great that dancing is so popular; thanks for your good wishes!

Wow! What an awesome shot! I can't help but feel wistful at the energy, resilience, flexibility, strength of young people dancing. Salsa has really evolved here too, with teens and 20-somethings taking on far more advanced moves than we ever have!

Deborah! These kids can dance all night long and you're right the moves they are doing are amazing! I'll be taking pictures!!!

Howdy Debbie

Congrats to your daughter Megan and Antonic geting

their photo featured on the magazine cover.

Have a good one Dale

Thank you Dale! Megan has had a wonderful Senior year full of great memories and this one tops them all. Thanks for stopping by!

What a great way to have fun and stay in shape at the same time!  Plus, this kind of dancing is something that Megan will be able to do for many, many years to come.  Good for her!

Thanks for sharing this great story!

Thanks Kim, someone took a great video of her last night swing dancing (prior to salsa dancing!LOL) She's definitely getting that exercise!
