Since it still feels like Summer in October, consider visiting Occoquan Park in Lorton, Virginia off of Route 95 south. You can also enjoy Occoquan water trail, a 40 mile route along two tributary waterways of the Chesapeake Bay, along 10,000 acres.
The park has athletic fields, batting cage, boating and fishing. The park also has plenty of room for a picnic on the grass or at one of their many picnic tables.

There is also women suffrage prisoners at Occoquan workhouse. There is a marker providing details of the events that occurred back in 1917 regarding the women who were demanding the right to vote.
While I was there I even took a hike on one of the many trails observing many of the birds and other wildlife which spans almost 400 acres. For those who know me, I actually enjoyed it (I am NOT an outdoor girl!!).
