If you're interested in living in the Downtown Charlottesville area, you will quickly come to know the Belmont neighborhood. During the course of my 20 plus years in Charlottesville real estate, I've had the pleasure of watching Belmont grow, change, suffer a little, and finally seem to really find itself again.
The 403-acre Belmont neighborhood is a late 19th Century neighborhood consisting primarily of two “1890’s era subdivisions, “Belmont” and “Carlton”. Originally, the county estate “Belmont” was the prosperous farm estate of John M. Carr, the nephew of Dabney Carr, a boyhood friend of Thomas Jefferson. The Belmont Mansion got its name from the farm when it was built circa 1837 by the original owner John Winn.
Area studies led to its designation as a priority neighborhood for improvements from 1996-1999, which resulted in enhancements such as new paved crosswalks, street trees and planters in “Downtown Belmont.” The Neighborhood has a mixture of housing, schools, parks, scattered corner convenience stores, walkable streets, a hostel, coffee shops, ay least one art gallery, and a few really good neighborhood restaurants.
From The CAAR Real Estate Weekly article, Belmont: Charlottesville's Vibrant Urban Neighborhood,
Belmont began changing in the mid-20th century when many prominent members of the community either died off or moved to other areas of the city and county. Rental units were on the rise and many landlords allowed their properties to depreciate. After years of decline, the Belmont Neighborhood Association was formed in 1980 and has served as an advocate for the needs of the community. As a result, the community has enjoyed a resurgence of development thanks to the vitality of community activists and neighbors
Today Belmont is a varied community in every sense of the word, with coffee shops, restaurants, galleries and other businesses coming into the area. The eclectic neighborhood continues to attract residents who enjoy the energy that a more urban community provides.
