What would you do if you were showing houses and townhouses in the communities surrounding VA Tech campus today and heard about another shooting? Several police and emergency personell converge on VT while your with a family showing homes nearby. What do you say to potentials buyers? The area is being blocked off and you can't leave from the house you're showing, and a armed suspect that just killed 2 people is being sought in the area? Do you tell your customers/clients things will return to normal eventually and just stay put? Do you call 911 and report your location and your situation? Do you call your Broker? Spouse? Do you have an emergency plan in mind for emergencies like this? Would you try to keep everyone calm and lock up the house, and stay away from the windows? Suppose you locked up house and took cover in the basement, and the doorbell rings-what would you do then? Could you call 911 and be able to tell them the address? Would you send a 911 text to your broker or spouse with the correct address? Do you think everyone would be safer in the house or in your car?
I'm just asking all of these questions because I think it's wise for agents to have some sort of emergency plan in mind, and know exactly what they should do in a situation like this. If anyone has any safety ideas to add, please contribute and share how you would react in a situation like this.
