He beat a competing inventor, Elisha Gray, to the punch by just a few hours, and won the legal battle over the rights of ownership in the courtroom. The most recognized quote assigned to Mr. Bell is probably "Mr. Watson-come here-I want to see you" which are believed to be the first words successfully transmitted from one telephone to another.
