For the last few years there have been plans on the books to redevelop the area where the current Springfield Mall is located into a pedestrian friendly urban center. The long range plans include mixed use residential, office and retail.
Springfield residents and supporters of the plans have waited anxiously for the final plans to be approved. On May 18, 2009 the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is expected to meet with the malls owner Vornado Realty Trust and sign the final rezoning proposals.
Having watched Springfield Mall first being built and having seen many stores come and go over the decline over the last few years has been disheartening. As the plans for the new Springfield Mall and town center unfold it is nice to think that an area where Springfield residents once flocked for movies and shopping can become a new destination is exciting.

Hi Cynthia...Renewing Springfield Mall would be wonderful for that area. Talk about green!
We need to do more renovating and less new construction in new areas leaving empty structures behind.
Kate
Kate-no doubt about it. I remember when Springfield Mall was "the" place to go. We bought some of our wedding china at Lansbury's before it went out of business. It has been sad to see the mall decline so revitilization will be a much needed boost to the area.
Lots of empty storefronts at my two favorite local malls also. It has also expanded to strip malls with "going out of business" sales lately. Some of my favorite stores are just gone. I'm glad for you that your area is getting just the boost it may need.
Tammy-if all of the plans go through it will be a long process but well worth the "mess" and wait.
