****Update****Springfield Mall Revitilization Project Not Quite Yet

Earlier this week I posted the information that the Springfield Mall Revitilization looked like it was going to pass with the next meeting of the Fairfax County Supervisors.

Unfortunately on May 18th when the Supervisors met a deal still had not been finalized with the owners of the Target Store and property and the deal could not be passed.

Though this is a disappointment it does not mean that the project is dead forever. Talks still continue with the Target owners and hopefully by the next Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting all of the details will be in place

Springfield Mall photo by Kevin HFor the last few years there have been plans on the books to redevelop the area where the current Springfield Mall is located into a pedestrian friendly urban center. The long range plans include mixed use residential, office and retail.

Springfield residents and supporters of the plans have waited anxiously for the final plans to be approved. On May 18, 2009 the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors is expected to meet with the malls owner Vornado Realty Trust and sign the final rezoning proposals.

Having watched Springfield Mall first being built and having seen many stores come and go over the decline over the last few years has been disheartening. As the plans for the new Springfield Mall and town center unfold it is nice to think that an area where Springfield residents once flocked for movies and shopping can become a new destination is exciting.
