Hi there: Good morning! I was thinking yesterday about expectations. What brought this on? Yesterday a banker friend and I heard that an SBA loan that we thought was completely dead will be signing today. Obviously, we didn't expect this.
In fact, I've found in this business that the less I expect the better I do. Last year was a pretty good year for me. Yet I went into it with very little in the way of expectations. My biggest goal was to let everyone know I had changed companies as I was afraid they wouldn't know how to find me.
Fast forward to this year. I had too many expectations. I set all my goals and went about working and expecting. Needless to say, my year got off to an incredibly slow start. In fact, it didn't really start improving until this fall.
I told my banker friend that next year I was going back to little or no expectations. I recently had the opportunity to hear one of my favorite authors, Bob Burg, share his thoughts from some of his books (he co-authored a wonderful little book called "The Go-Giver). Bob mentioned that one of the unstated laws is called the "law out of left field". This is where something good happens when we least expect it; perhaps even when we've practically run out of hope. This is what frequently happens to me.
How about you? What works best? Are you a list-maker and a goal-setter? Do you expect and then receive? Don't get me wrong. I expect certain things as well but, if things do or don't happen, I've decided I'm not going to worry about it! Have a great day!
