Kitsap County Flag Day :: Disposal Day

Flag Day is Saturday, June 14th and commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United Sates which happened on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation making June 14th the official Flag Day and in August of 1949 National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.

So on Saturday, June 14th if you have a flag, fly it proudly. If your flag is in need of disposal you can take it to The Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 29 located at 521 National Ave South, Bremerton for their annual flag disposal. The Fleet Reserve Association will have its annual United States Flag burning ceremony to dispose of all unserviceable flags collected for disposal.

You may bring your flags to The Fleet Reserve Association any day between 6am and midnight prior to June 14th. The Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 29 provides a dignified ceremonial disposal for the community each year. The ceremony will take place at 9am, Saturday, June 14th at The Fleet Reserve's rear parking area, 521 National Ave South, Bremerton.

The History of Flag Day

Posted Friday Jun 06

My local Realtor association heads up the annual celebration here in the Olympia area. I was told we don't get to have a cannon salute at the end this year :(

The use to have a real cannon? That is too cool! So what is the reason this year?

I love Flag Day - I know many do not get it but to me it is one of the greatest days wish more knew what it stood for

Jo I am ashamed to say that I did not even remember we had a special day like this. Pretty cool though.

Thesa, I love areas that put out flags to line the street that day! This is a real poster form 1917 - isn't that cool - I was so glad I could use it since it is in public domain!

Bill, I am sure you aren't the only one. I always remember because I have a sister that was born on flag day.

I have no idea why nor Jo. There were a couple cannon accidents around the sound last summer... that may be wihy.

Cannon accidents - ouch! In my prior life I manufactured explosives and always love a good loud sound!!

Jo, I have never heard of a flag burning celebration before.  Do they do this every year?

Marchel, The flag has a really specific way of disposal and usually in a community there are groups that handle the "service". The Boy Scouts of America usually do this once a year too. This group does this every year as a service to the community.

Hi Jo,
Thanks for the reminder that flags should be disposed of in the proper manner. Too bad more towns do not celebrate Flag Day, it is our symbol of freedom and we should show our respect.
What a great photo!
