Edmonds is building a new park

Edmonds, WA -- I'm especially excited to announce that the city of Edmonds is builiding a new park. And they're looking to us for help in naming it. The new park's location will be at the northwest corner of 75th Pl. W & 162nd St. SW in north Edmonds. As is fitting for this part of town too, it'll have a great expansive view of the Puget Sound. To get to the new park, just head north on 76th Ave W from anywhere in Edmonds. Go past Edmonds-Woodway High School, past Ezell's Chicken, past the Perrinville post office... you'll go almost all the way to the end and you'll see it on your left about 1 block before you reach N. Meadowdale R. and Meadowdale Beach Park.

Now why might I be especially excited about this park? It happens to be across the street from my brother and his family. Their three kids will be putting a lot of time into breaking it in.

The park itself will sit adjacent to the railroad tracks that run through Edmonds. Due west of the park towards the water is the old abandoned dock that used to be used for....

Names for the new park in north Edmonds must meet one of the following criteria by providing park identity through:

  1. The geographic location of the park; or
  2. An adjoining neighborhood or street, natural feature or an oustanding feature of the park; or
  3. A commonly recognized historical event, group, organization or individual (living or deceased); or
  4. Outsanding accomplishment(s) by an individual or organization for the good of the community.

The new name can't be the name of an existing school or public facility though.

If you think you've got a great name for the park, the submission deadline is November 13, 2009 at 4pm. You can email your suggestion to parknamingcontest@ci.edmonds.wa.us or mailing it to:

Don't forget to tell them why you think your suggestion should be selected. I've already put in my suggestion of Cannery Park, to name it after the old fish cannery that you see right on the water. It's abandoned and fenced off now, but still a reminder of our fishing history here in Edmonds.

Good luck!
