We've all heard the adage and it does hold true. Two weeks ago I took the kids to Olympia, Washington (my home town) to be tourist! It was a novel idea, as it turned out. We visited the fountain at Capital Lake... watched the set-up of Lake-Fair... watched a train run-over a quarter (just smashed it! I'd never done that as a kid... and not as an adult either... a "kid" and his girlfriend were out for a walk, the train was a comin', set down the quarter on the track and presto... smashed quarter. I don't recommend doing this, it means racing onto the tracks ahead of an on-coming train... but it was cool none-the-less) walked past a café... and around Sylvester Park... and had a Starbucks!
You can go home again... just as a tourist...
Enjoy the photos...

Hi Debi -- You rat fink! I can't eat and you show pictures of the Olympia Oyster House. Years ago they used to have the really small fried oysters that would just melt in your mouth. Lord would I love a plate of them now. Aloha
Hey Bruce - Opps...My bad... I didn't even think how this would affect YOU! Your in my prayers... I'll send the plate oysters your way when you're up to it! Deb
looks like it was a rare sunny summer day in Olympia
Debi...
It is true. There is no going home again.
I grew up in a small town in N.H. Last time I went back I hardly recognized it. All the woods where I used to play and build my forts were gone.
Lots and lots of new subdivisions and very little small town atomsphere left :)
TLW...ROAR!
Larry...I am shocked! Washington and Oregon both have their fair share of sunny days! Debi, I love the Northwest! The photos are great and I am sure that a great time was had by all! BTW, did you notice that the house you grew up in seems to be smaller??? :-)
Larry - We've seen our share of the sun... it's not as rare as everyone thinks!
Sarah - I've noticed the house I grew up in IS smaller...
TWL - Lots of new subdivisions here too... where do all the people come from?
Debi-
Great. I remember going through Olympia and Tumwater many years ago and visiting the Olympia Brewery. Are they still in business?
Tom - The Brewery was sold to Hamms in the 80's, I think, then a water bottleing company (with Pepsi? - "It's the Water", but they never used the slogan) Now it's vacant... There is a resturant in downtown Olympia that got the recipie and is again brewing the beer... I think the owners are from the Portland area. Thanks for stopping by
Thanks for sharing Debi. It looks lovely. I love seeing pictures of places I haven't been (yet!).
It looks like a very beautiful town. Thanks for sharing the photos. it is one of the states I have not been to before.
Beautiful pictures, thanks for sharing! You are right, when you have left and go back, it is never the same!
Anya - Your neck of the woods is beautiful... drove Hwy 1 to the Great Lakes many years ago... Thanks for visiting...
Dianne - Come visit, the mountains are awesome to see! Thanks for stopping by....
Bill & Barbara Jo - It was rather cool to see how the town has 'grown up' Thanks for the comments....
Debi: Well, I live in DuPont, the office is in Oly, and I just got back from the small town I grew up in, Beloit, WI. I also noticed that the house I grew up in is smaller. Wierd. How do they do that? Having lived in the Oly area for the past decade, I never have seen the old capitol building. Thanks for sharing the photos! I think I will visit it this next week. If you ever get homesick and would like a few more snapshots, just say the words. Best wishes for '08!
