What's life like on a five-square-mile (thirteen-square-kilometer) patch of U.S. soil at the tip of a Canadian peninsula?
Well I just got back from Point Roberts, Washington a wee two day get-a-way to visit a dear friend that I hadn't seen for a long time. She was staying in a gorgeous cottage for a couple of weeks and invited me to come and join her.
As I quickly tried to wrap up and ‘put on hold' work.....I hopped in the car, and while only 2 hours from home......I slipped across the border into the tiny nether world of Point Roberts.......
A geopolitical oddity, it's a practical exclave of the United States, on the southernmost tip of the Tsawwassen Peninsula, just south of Delta, British Columbia, Canada. Interestingly enough it can only be reached from the the rest of the U.S. by travelling through Canada or crossing Boundary Bay.

Drawing the border between Canada and the U.S. along the 49th parallel was a great idea, except that when the line reached the ocean just south of Vancouver, it cut off a teeny weeny bit of Washington and left it hanging out in the Pacific all by itself! Although in some ways it would have made more sense to make this little area a part of Canada, that never happened... :-( Instead Icelandic farmers, fishermen and cannery workers and not a few retirees began living on this 5 sq. mile peninsula.
The scenery is gorgeous and life is ridiculously peaceful...!
You can't buy shoes.., there's no doctor or dentist or pharmacy... with a population of under 1400 people, and only 34% of those full time residents.....the majority of people staying at the Point are Canadians who use it as a cottage or holiday spot.
And it's not difficult to guess why.. as the breeze rustles through the majestic trees and twilight falls...it's easy to be mesmerized by the natural beauty, miles of beaches, the pods of orcas...quaint cottages......and most of all peace and tranquility!
Needless to say I had a fabulous visit with my friend.........who with 8 children and 13 grandchildren......also was also having a much needed break..........we had a veritable 'gabfest'.......hiked, breathed in the fresh sea air.........and alas.....I'm back refreshed......! Well sort of...........:-)

Liz, I wasn't familiar with Point Roberts at all and how it hangs out there as the state of Washington with Canada above it. It looks like a very peaceful place and you captured it gloriously with your photos. Wow 8 children and 13 grandchildren, that is amazing. This post will be a Group Feature in Diary of a Realtor.
Liz, I speant a lot of time examining your very gorgeous eye candy. What a treat, indeed! This is the first time I have ever heard of this place. Oh my word, what a lovely hide-a-way. Simply awesome! Thank you so much for sharing this. I enjoyed your post about spending time with your girlfriend and learning something new today very much! ;-)
Lovely photos, Liz. The map is very funny and very interesting.
Liz,
This is a tailor-made "Jeopardy!" answer. It's interesting how things that made sense in one era don't in another. Thanks.
Steve
How wonderful Liz - to spend time with a special friend in such a special place. I had no idea of such a place, Point Roberts Washington. Very interesting and very beautiful!
Liz, it is gorgeous. I never knew about Point Washington, what a neat piece of information. I think I should put this on my list of things to see.
Gary - hi there - nice to know you're still the first to comment, even though I've been gone for a bit! Constant...:-) It is unique isn't it........as for all the kids.........my work partner for 9 years......had 14 kids.............we have a very large dutch, reformed, and christian community were 5 children seems to be the average............in that sense with 3 I have a small family! :-)
Carolyn thanks for visiting my post and the great comments.....i love your 'eye candy' term, its so perfect.........thats how I feel about photos too........although sometimes I think 'art' should have a more sophisticated reference, maybe 'cho...co...late........?......;-)
Shirley - it is kind of funny isn't it.......something unique! :-)
YOu're right Steve! What at one time seems like the best decision/choice, later doesn't always seem that way...:-) I love Jeopardy!
Thanks Debbie - I like how you put that - it was special - and sometimes even more special when you look back........those moments live long...:-)
Audrey - Only if you make Vancouver a stop on the way..:-)
Liz: Almost Heaven appears to be a very fitting title for Point Roberts. Your pictures are truly amazing. What a great place... thanks for sharing.
Liz: I took a closer look at Point Roberts with Mapquest. It is so cool how the boat harbor is "hollowed out" and back off the bay. The way Marina Drive and Harbor Seal Drive enclose the Marina is just great. What a great place. Again, thanks for sharing.
Liz - Wonderful Photographs and it looks so much like Northern Minnesota where I was born and raised. Looking at your photos makes me want to go visit my family. Thank you for your post.
Do you live in BC - Canada?
Robert
Thanks Karen Anne - cool that you went and checked it out on Mapquest....its wonderful discouvering little treasures......I just went back and looked at my pics and it almost feels surreal ....looking back.........its always about 'moments' isn't it?...:-)
Hi Robert! Is Northern Minnesota like that...I didn't know! Never would have guessed......the mountains and ocean..! Nothing beats that combination! And yes....I am from BC. just a wee bit east of Vancouver...:-) Thanks for sharing..:-)
Hi Liz, just a wee bit East, eh? I shall have to remember that when I hook up with the family on their next Jazz cruise to Canada. I missed this one because the kids were still in school. :-)
Carolyn - a wee bit east of Vancouver, like 1.5 hr drive...:-0....family Jazz cruise? Whats that about, from New York to Vancouver or N.Y. to Eastern Canada......tell me more!
Liz - Well, no mountains and ocean but all the Trees (green), lakes (water) and mosquitoes. Do you know since I moved to Las Vegas 7 years ago, I have never seen a mosquito.
I really miss then, (Not)!
Liz,
I spend a couple days a month there. It is a hassle doing the border when school is out. From the US I have to cross a total of four times in the day. Carrying tools I cannot get Nexus. I try to leave early, never a wait. Then expect one to two hours driving home so I take a book. I inspected at least one of the houses you show there, maybe two but unsure on one.
Robert.......:-) was it worth trading the water and trees for the 'no mosquitos'? i HATE mosquitoes - i have a horrible allergic reaction to them - but thank goodness we rarely see them here.....How is live in Vegas......totally different scenically isn't it........but beautiful nevertheless!
Steven - yeah I thought you might go there, being your line of work - AND the fact that I'm sure there are no inspectors there!........its a beautiful place......I took a lot more photos of the houses etc.........and its kind of neat the you've inspected some of them........did you do the B&B?
Liz - Las Vegas being one of the entertainment capitals of the world makes it a little different then other places. We have almost approx 5000 visitors per day that visit year round. There are some pretty places outside of Las Vegas, but when I look for beauty I head to northern California or Utah.
I have never been to BC, but would very much like to visit there some day!
Robert - I've never been to Vegas....weird.....its not that far...........gambling has never appealed to me but it would be entertaining.......i love California and Utah too.......Bc is gorgeous too.......sometimes we take our own backyard for granted......but it is pretty spectacular!
Liz - great eye candy with those photos. I have been to Pt. Roberts, but made the trip in my boat. It's a pretty neat place.
Mike - Hey that would be cool making the trip by boat...........I'd love to do that...:-)
Liz, I shall have to call my cousin Amanda Marie. Her Dad found this and invited a bunch of the family to go. Will get the details to you as soon as I find out which port they left from. Her Dad lives in PA and she said they spent the entire day having a blast on this ship that took them to Canada and back - 12 hours worth of Jazz ws played. I am sooo sorry I missed it. :-)
Liz, it sounds like you had a nice visit with your friends. The pictures are awesome!!! Between these and the one's on your other posts, it sounds like I need to make it a point to travel up that way and onto BC. Beautiful country!
Hi Liz....Great Post on Point Roberts and awesome Photos, Well Done, thanks for sharing, have a great day!
Carolyn....i'm thinking...you're thinking..........east coast! :-) I'm in Vancouver just north of Seattle!...But the Jazz cruise sounds sooo awesome!
Sondra! - Yes come on up! :-) It was a terrific visit -and for me anything near the seas, the deep blue sea is heaven! :-) thanks...
Hi Fred......well we and Point Roberts aren't to far from you ......just a ferry ride away! :-) thanks!
Liz, What a wonderful post. I've never heard of Point Roberts and love your photo's and the information you've shared. How fun to spend some time with your friend too.
Thanks Debbie - ! It was such a wonderful mini-break...........and I can still smell the smell of salty warm ocean air..........every time i smell the sea i feel like i've died and gone to heaven!
Liz,
I was supposed to be up there tomorrow but the septic tank let me down, the buyer and seller too from what I hear.
Steven - ahh too bad, so are the going to have it fixed and get you to come back?
Liz, wow! I had no idea.
Thanks for an illuminating post!
