I love watching this show as it provides families with a new home. Many families have lost a provider or are suffering from a disease or disability and need help with their home. I seldom cry at movies, but I must say.......each week I look forward to my regular tear-jerker showing one more family a week of happiness! Extreme Makeover Home Edition is really making a difference in the lives of families across the country.
This time while watching I thought I'd actually make an effort to get other people pumped about what this show is doing. A member mentioned to find out ways to help in your community to visit http://www.abettercommunity.com/ so I did. This is ABC's site where they "hope to inspire you and others to make a difference through volunteerism and public service".
They list Ongoing Partner Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity ~ Build Decent Housing and Brighter Futures For Hard-Working Families, HomeAid ~ Building Hope for Today's Homeless, 1-800-Volunteer.org ~ engaging more people more effectively in volunteering to help solve serious social problems, Camp Heartland ~ makes a vital, lifelong difference for children impacted by HIV/AIDS, Clearpool ~ provides underprivileged children an escape from inner city New York by helping them discover a whole new world, The AIDS Council ~ to reduce the risk, fear, and incidence of HIV infection, encourage the independence of people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS and promote understanding of their needs, AND MANY MORE!
Ty Pennington is the Leader of the Design team and "has certainly carved out a niche for himself as the lovable, off-the-wall, hunk-of-a-carpenter and home design guru". He is enthusiastic about helping families and each week chooses his "secret room" for a family member. Each member of the design team puts effort into getting to know the family, what they like and hold close to their heart, then create a room perfect for them.
If you know a family that might benefit from an Extreme Makeover - Home Edition, they can apply by printing out an application, taking a video, and sending with photo's and a description of themselves. It sounds fairly simple to do. They look for families that are "inspirational and deserving".
I hope you enjoy watching this show as much as I do and find the motivation within yourself to make a difference in your community.

Yes, I am moved when I watch, but I also wonder why they couldn't have divided up what they spent on one family and helped several.
Here is a link to an article about the TAX consequences of these shows. Not always wonderful for the
families.
Also, I have a friend who hung wallpaper on one episode of this show. She said that the "STARS" just show up to have their picture taken after the workers have been up all night doing the work. They do little short spots with them pretending to do work. That's show biz!!
I have watched some of those episodes and they are truely amazing!!
I watched as a BUNCH of kids who lost their parents had their home remodelled and renovated.......
AWESOME was the only word to describe what was done to their home.
=-)
I don't get to watch much tv. I didn't even know it was still on the air, but I was moved to tears once when I watched it. I don't necessarily agree that they are helping some of these families but in ways hindering them. For instance, the one family where there were a bunch of kids in one house whose parents had both died within months of each other...I think the money would have been better spent on college educations. I heard they lost the house but I don't know if it is true or not. I remember they were in a lawsuit over it. I guess the show isn't about college educations, but still, I think those kids need a college education more than they need a big fancy house they can't afford to pay taxes on. Just my opinion. All in all the show is a lot better than the other junk on tv these days.
Jim - I suspect there are many organizations out helping people, each with their own mission. Because this is a cooperative effort, I think it's one way the building industry pulls together to do something good that might not otherwise have been possible.
Pam - I would expect to see an increase in property taxes. Here I think the benefit outweighs the tax consequence. Now, if there is a federal consequence I'm not thinking of, then that might be more material and hardship on the family. I also tend to think that any maintenance issues, should be minimal with new construction, might also have the entire community to call upon that just helped them build the house.
Alexander - Thanks for commenting. Always nice seeing you. :)
Cheri - You make a valid point I can understand. In that circumstance I agree, their education is more important that building them a house they have no means to take care of.
My husband and I always watch, and always cry. I get great joy out of watching very deserving families finally get the break that they have waited so long for, and truly deserve!
Oregon Real Estate - Thank you for leaving your comments. It is refreshing to see people connecting in their community to better their lives. Last night was another great episode! Take care!
I don't like that show at all. That Ty guy strikes me as lucky. I mean he looks like a drug user, or maybe a previous meth user. Giving is a great thing, until it's commercialized, then it's not giving any more, is it?
Greg - sorry you don't enjoy watching it. I've met Ty twice now while helping families in both Kitsap and King Counties. Although slim, he is actually very fit and displays no evidence or behavior associated with drugs. He actually seems to live very healthy with a life of fitness. Interesting how shows like this will motivate some people to do good, yet others like yourself only see something negative out of it. I hope you have great things to share with others and feel good about yourself.
Happy Holidays!
Kalin - thank you for taking the time to comment. Your dad is in my thoughts and prayer.
