MOVING! It's All About Preparation

Summer is the season of sunshine, chirping birds, camping, and... MOVING! Use our tips to give you more time on the bbq, and less time unpacking boxes. It's All About Preparation...

• Go through your home room by room and purge unwanted items before the move. Not only will it save you time in the packing/unpacking process, but it will also save you money on packing materials! Ask yourself, "Do I love this or use this enough to pay to move it?" Tip: NW Donation Centers will conveniently come right to your door to pick up unwanted items. Call to set up an appointment - 800.992.2060

• Get packing materials to start NOW! Ask yourself, "Will I need this in the next 4 weeks?" If the answer is no, then pack it up. Be sure to label boxes properly (room/contents) - you will thank yourself later. Always buy 15% more boxes than you think you'll need. Those boxes fill up fast. A full box is only great if you can still lift it! Don't pack them too heavy.

• Go on a freezer diet - check freezer and refrigerator and plan use of remaining food. Get creative! Food is a pain to move, and you can save on your grocery bill!

• Pack a "First Week in the New Home" box so that you will have living essentials without having to dig through other packed boxes. Some items to include: dish soap, paper plates and utensils, paper towels, toilet paper, large garbage bags, pet food, basic set of pots/pans, cooking utensils, cleaning supplies, and standard tools

• Pack a suitcase for every family member as though you were going on a 2 week vacation - this will allow you the flexibility to unpack at your pace (be sure to include toys if you have children).

• On moving day, pack a cooler ahead of time with food and beverages for two days.

• Remove all jewelry and other valuables to prevent potential loss or damage during move. Keep your most cherished possessions in a special box which you will move yourself.

• Collect everything you have loaned out and return everything you have borrowed.

• Provide 30-day cancellation notice to household service providers (cleaning service, landscaper, newspaper, etc.)

• Fill out change of address forms at the Post Office.

• Check and make inventory of all furniture for dents and scratches; notify moving company of your inventory and compare upon arrival at your new house.

• Cancel any recurring appointments you have (for out of town moves only)

• If you have children, consider hiring a baby-sitter on moving day. Things will be hectic!

• Contact insurance agent to transfer or cancel coverage

• Check with your Doctor's and Dentist for all family records and prescriptions (for out of town moves only).

• Obtain your children's school records (for out of town moves only)

• Transfer or close checking and savings accounts. If closing, arrange for a cashier's check or money order to pay moving company upon arrival in new community.

· If driving a long distance, have your automobile serviced for trip. If you have children, pack plenty ofgames/activities for the drive!

• Double check with the driver to make certain moving company records show the proper delivery address for your new house, as well as scheduled delivery date (if applicable). Provide driver with all of your contact numbers in case a problem arises. Make sure you have their contact information as well.

· Conduct a final walk-thru of the entire house to ensure nothing is left behind.

Happy Moving!
