We've all heard the story of global warming...
I thought I'd get a jump on a new career; Pineapple Farmer
Last year we took a vacation to the wonderful island of Maui. While there, at a farmers market, a vendor was talking about how to start a pineapple. So, when we got home I did a bit of research, cut the top off a Maui Gold pineapple (ate the rest!) and planted it in a pot, put it in a sunny (not direct sunlight) spot in the "breakfast room". Watered it a bit (about once a week, but I checked the weather on Maui first... ). Sure enought, in about three months (I was starting to lose hope, but the top was still green, so I hung in there) there was new growth!!!!
As an experiment, I also twisted a top off, trimmed the shorter leaves, and put it in water to see if it would root. It also rooted and now has new growth. It rooted faster in water than in soil... I've got to plant it now...
As for global warming... I'm ready!

So Debi, Call me when you get fruit. I've long been a proponent of eating regionally, so seldom have pineapple. If you get fruit, I'm in.
Thanks David! It's rather fun to try growing something that isn't in our climate zone. I may have to invest in a greenhouse.... the pineapple may get as big as 6 feet across (and tall too) I'll keep the blog with progress.... I was told 18 months later there will be fruit...
I've done this will pineapples, and one year it actually produced a little baby pineapple. Unfortunately, we had a cold snap and it killed the baby. It took it about 1-1/2 years to produce. I keep them outside year round, and they are all still alive.
This is very interesting. I will definitely try it, and hope that I can grow a pineapple. Thanks for sharing.
