The Thurston County Chamber of Commerce's annual FOOFARAW drew record attendees and sponsors this year. The FOOFARAW is a military appreciation event unparallelled anywhere.
In case you're wondering, "foofaraw" is an actual word in the English language and means "much ado about nothing". In relation to the Chamber's appreciation of the military, it translates into a fun-filled, relaxing day for the invited soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. The lucky military personnel (approximately 300) were chartered by members of the Olympia Yacht Club on board 38 yachts to the club's private island near Shelton.
The guests were greeted to the island by the Scottish Bagpipers and were welcomed with drinks and appetizers. Members of the Chehalis Indian Tribe roasted fresh salmon on cedar stakes over an open fire. The time on the island could be passed by playing volley ball, basket ball, throwing horseshoes, hitting golf balls, a friendly competition of tug-a-war, or just relaxing on the beach. To top it all off, over 100 items were given away through a raffle and everyone received a goodie bag upon departure.
This wonderful event is an annual tradition, now in its 45th year and could not be possible without the many volunteers and sponsors in the business community. This year was my second year in attendance. I remember when my husband was still in the military and stationed at Ft. Lewis, he had the opportunity to attend Foofaraw one year and came home raving about the wonderful time he's had.
An occasion like this is a great opportunity to let our military personnel know how much their commitment, service and sacrifice means to the community. I will continue to support this special event and only wish there were more boats, a bigger island and more armed forces members to benefit.
