90's Flashback

I've been selling real estate for a looooong time. But as we all know, time has a way of slipping past us without our really being aware of it's passing. Yesterday I logged on to our MLS hotsheet and saw a listing in my market area priced just over $100,000. Not a mobile home, not vacant land, not a condo....a stick built (albeit bank-owned) property.

I asked myself when the last time I could remember seeing a HOUSE listed in the 110K range, and immediately flashed back to a small 3 BR rambler on Kent's Easthill which I listed and sold in 1992 or 1993. Funny how easily it was for me to remember the images of that house.

A career in real estate is a journey.

The road is full of twists, turns and lately....lots of dips.

So true! My baby sister started her journey in 1976 and I was cleaning out rental properties in 1973. No truer words have been written than yours when you write "The road is full of twists, turns and lately....lots of dips." Well said and good encouragement to the younger ones. Hang on, it is going to change. Then it will change again.

Yes its interesting I ve only been in the game 8 years, but recently I sold the same house twice, it had differenct colours but the same curb appeal !! The price will come full circle for sure !!

Colleen, I am often amazed at the stuff that lurks in my brain about the details of houses I've sold!  That includes the prices!

Wow!  100K, crazy - yes it has been a very long time since we have seen that.  I have been some crazy prices of late.  Wonder what 2009 will bring, fun times :)

WOW! I can't remember what I sold my own house for back in the 90's.  Great memory, Colleen!

Colleen, I would agree, that is very low for the Pacific Northwest area. Look at gas prices being over $4.00 per gallon. Today I saw a sign in our area at $1.66. I hear Kansas City had $1.43

How fast things can change sometimes, for sure!!

Mandy - Goose has that effect on people. :)

Most of the properties here that are around the 100K mark are 'interesting' to say the least.  It's been a WHILE since I've seen that on a normal house.  Good to see you back, btw.  I was about to think you gave up on us.

The more things change...the more they stay the same. Real estate will always have it's ups and downs, that's for sure. And there are a lot of dips in the real estate biz...and not just the people! Ha ha!  ;)

Colleen - Those early 90's prices are beginning to pop up in distressed properties--although most properties are at their 2004 (approximate) value in my area.

2009 should be an interesting continuation of this real estate journey we're on!

Colleen - Yes the dips but with 35+ years I can say that beyond the dips is another rise. While the stock market comes and goes I truly believe there is less risk in real estate over the long run than any other kind of investment.

I hear you, Colleen. Last month I listed a home at $70,000 and thought to myself, "Wow, I haven't listed a home at a price like that since 1978." Deja Vu feeling. Kinda creepy, actually.

How crazy is that. I do believe it is a journey and I for one, am going to enjoy the ride.

Great reference to the twists and turns and dips, just like a roller coaster.  And just like a roller coaster going into the dip, this latest market's dip is felt right in the pit of my stomach.  I just came into the industry (about 3 years ago) just as the roller coaster had paused at the top ready to "dip" again.  Thanks for your comment on my own blog awhile back.  Appreciate it!   Susan Brinker

It is funny the things that bring back memories and how things have changed in such a short amount of time. Congratulations on a great 1st year in the rain, you have a lot of great posts to be proud of and that were a great read.

I wish we would just have a few more new storys that say this very same thing.  The more postive info we can get in the news the more confident people will be.
