A new sport is gaining momentum on Lake Sammamish: Wake Surfing. This last weekend I had the opportunity to try Wake Surfing on Lake Sammamish. Thanks to the Eastgate Expounders(Toastmasters in Bellevue) summer BBQ our good friends Allison and Brian were kind & patient enough to teach many of us how to wake surf. Wake Surfing is where you stand up on a shortened surf board and surf the wake of a power boat. The power boat has ballast on one side and lists heavily to that side. The displaced water makes a large wake that a properly balanced surfer can ride and do tricks in.
In the video below you can see myself and my daughter giving it a try. The object is to let go of the rope and you will see Allison and Brian showing off for the camera :) I really enjoyed the sport and I would recomend it for people of all ages and skill levels. My daughter that you see in the video got up later, has never wake boarded, skied or snow skied but she was able to get up. I think it's a great way for kids to learn water sports without the danger of being straped into a board or ski(wake boarding.) All in all the afternoon was a lot of fun. I would highly encourage anyone to look into Wake Surfing.
This July 26- 28th the North West Wake Surfing Association is hosting classes for to learn how to "rip it up skim style." Then July 29th -31st the NWWSA host the 3rd Annual WakeSurf Northwest Open
