We came across the greatest gadget at Costco (our best friend!). It's called Neat Receipts®. It's a lightweight, portable scanner that helps you scan, read and organize documents, business cards and (best of all) receipts. It will even help you easily organize your receipts by tax form and export to Excel®, Quicken®, Quickbooks®, TurboTax® and other similar software programs.

When we first saw this at Costco, we were skeptical. We have used other image recognition tools / software and not been please with the results. We bought it, though, and we're glad we did. It is easy to install, easy to use, and is saving us HOURS of time organizing our business receipts.
Now, we won't tell you it is 100% accurate. You need to watch the data that gets imported and edit if/as necessary. If you have treated your receipts well, keeping them flat and legible, you'll have more success than if the receipts are all wadded up in a bag. If you are a bag stuffer, don't worry. It will still save you (or your tax preparer) HOURS of time and let you move on to things that you enjoy more!
Check out Neat Receipts® at http://www.neatreceipts.com/. Their published price is $229.95. We paid $149.99 for ours at our local Costco. Costco's current website price is $154.99 and includes a desktop stand and a deluxe travel case.

Wow if this works this will really clear up some clutter on my desk. Thank for the heads up..
Patty & Scott, looks nice but does it work? Does it work directly or do you have to translate the scan into other programs (like you do with Card Scan)?
Patty & Scott - Looks like a great gadget. Definitely will save me alot of time with my receipts :)
Sharon - It really is cool. Once you've scan your receipts/documents, you can search by keywords. Much easier than shuffling through piles of paper!
Steve - We are not familiar with Card Scan, but with Neat Receipts, the data and an image of the original card/document/receipt is immediately created in the database software that somes with the product. From the program, you can easily search for information that you want, initiate emails, access the internet, organize receipts by tax form, etc. We love it!
Maria - Thanks for the comment. We're using our new toy to get caught up on our 2008 receipts so next tax season is more calm than this one was!
Patty & Scott, I am definitely looking into this gadget! My poor husband has piles of receipts ready to input, wouldn't it be nice to scan and organize! Thanks for the tip!
Debbie,
If you have a local Costco close to you we would recommend looking there first. They were on an endbase here at our Costco. It really is easy to use.
Cool! What a nice looking blog you have and the I love the recommendation! How snazzy.
Thanks Utah Dave for stopping by, have a great day!
Looks like a neat tool but the real tool is the software that makes it work like a tool.
I bought this a few months back but paid full price because we don't have a costco. I haven't used mine that much because I am behind so it is very time consuming. I think if you do it on a weekly basis it would be much better. I am not very tech savy so I'm not sure if I would be able to modify some of the receipts if it didn't read correctly. I guess I need to read the instructions again.
Hi Bonnie,
We got it down to a system that worked well for us. Scott was at the computer and I was feeding them thought the Neat Receipt gadget. I agree once you get it all done weekly or semi weekly would be easier. Thanks for stopping by!
Patty & Scott-
I was fortunate enough to borrow a friend's Neat Receipts... Love at first scan!!!!!
I LOVE mine. I feed it all of last years receipts and did the export to QB option. Wow.
Oh, and cute customization! I don't see it in my rss reader/feeder, though.
