So here I am, a proponent of walkable communities. And resenting the sidewalk outside my house that made it easy for a trespasser to get inside my car and steal from me. Right at the moment, having a community infra-structure that encourages strangers walking past my house is not feeling so good.
The responsibility is mine, I suppose. If I'd locked the car door, perhaps the little weasle would have continued on. Or maybe it would have broken my window, costing me much more inconvenience and money. Maybe if I'd brought the GPS into the house, then I wouldn't be hating some unknown delinquent and suffering. In the worst philosophy, if I didn't have it to lose, the thief couldn't have taken it.
But really, it's not the replaceable, non-essential items that were taken. It's my sense of peace, of trust, of community. I will look harder at the youth that walk by, youth that already don't smile, don't engage passerby or even each other when they huddle in separate islands of detachment, waiting for the morning school bus.
You know what's really hard here? It's letting it go. I've already dwelt on it more than will do good for me. Right now, I should be making real estate calls to my clients and potential clients, not dwelling on the frustration of not being able to confront the little buttheads that did this. I'm angry, and I don't want to spread that feeling. So, I'm going to go do some deep breathing. Maybe it's time for me to take up yoga. I'll miss my TomTom, and I'll work to keep my attitude toward others positive.
And I guess I'll be looking for a good deal on surveillence cameras to monitor my driveway.
