You might not think there would be ethnic traditions that are tied to the first day of school, but the Germans have it covered! School: A Sweet Start....On the child's first ever day of school, tradition has it in Germany, that the mother would make a tute (two-tah) and fill it with treats for the child. It was meant to sweeten the bitter pill of the first day of school, when life begins in earnest! Like many things, this custom has become commercialized, with tutes being sold in stores ...some of them are huge and measure up to 3 or 4 feet tall, sometimes as big as the child!
This was the first year I made tutes, and I made them for my grandkids...filled them with candy, and cute school supplies and toys....The kids loved them! In years past, the only tradition we had was the photo on the first day of school...NO MATTER THE AGE...yes, they hated it in high school, but I still did it!
Do you have any family tradition on the first day of school? I'd love to hear about them...PTasker@shorewest.com
