Apparently there is some kind of a scam going on in Wisconsin where property owners receive correspondence from the “State Record Retrieval Board” which informs the recipient that it is recommended that every homeowner obtain a copy of the deed to his or her house. The form contains information about deeds and different methods of holding title to properties and warns that it is not from an official government agency. Despite that, it appears to be “official” and is enough to convince some property owners to send in the $87 fee being charged. This is completely unnecessary and homeowners wanting a copy of the deed to their homes may obtain this through the local title company or the register of deeds.
