A Little Flexibility Goes a Long Way

stretching

Another great emailed article...

When you think about exercising, you probably start thinking of hitting the treadmill or pumping some iron. But the third key component necessary for fitness is flexibility. It reduces the chances that you’ll be plagued with muscle strains and aches, enhances your performance at other fitness activities, improves blood flow to your muscles and joints — and can even help you reduce your stress levels.

Fortunately, there’s more than one activity out there that can improve your range of motion and keep you limber. Here are a few things to add to your repertoire:

  • Yoga. Often thought of as a new-age zone out, this practice involves working your body into an array of positions. But yoga actually gives you a bit of a cardio workout while improving your range of motion, allowing you to develop a lean, toned body. The best part? Yoga is one of those great workout activities that you can start young (even as young as four) and continue throughout your life.
  • Pilates. Pilates develops stamina while it builds flexibility and can help you improve your posture and core strength while you go through a series of different exercises — either with Pilates equipment or on a simple mat. This is also another discipline that can be modified to meet your needs as you age.
  • Stretching. You don’t have to do yoga or Pilates to improve your flexibility. Simple stretches before and after your regular workout can help keep you limber.

An active lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise will help you lose weight faster, sculpt a gorgeous lean body, improve the health of your internal organs, and will make you feel confident, accomplished, and attractive. So, start today!
