Saving the Ash Trees

The emerald ash borer kills local ash trees in WisconsinWashington and Ozaukee Counties have been invaded by pesky emerald ash borers, an Asian insect that sets up camp in ash trees, sucking the life out of them before moving on. Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle has urged residents to help slow the spread of these insects by not transporting ash firewood that could carry these harmful pests. If the insects spread, it can have a devastating effect on not only the environment, but the local economy as well, since it will cost millions of dollars to remove and replant the trees lost. If you have ash trees on your property, check them for signs of possible infestation by looking for D-shaped exit holes or S-shaped tunnels underneath the bark.

Xytect is an insecticide used mostly as a preventative against infestation by the ash borers with a 2-year treatment plan. However, even though these pests are already here, tree experts recommend using Xytect on any ash trees on your property to help curb the attack of these tiny green monsters. The best way to treat your ash trees is to hire an expert. Unfortunately, this can be costly (up to $120 per tree). Many garden centers carry other products that aren't as effective, but are better than using nothing. Simply ask for products that will protect ash trees. With over 700 million ash trees in Wisconsin, the emerald ash borer has the potential to devastate the local environment. Anything residents can do to help is greatly appreciated!
