As I was driving over to an Amish Farm in the Hillsboro, WI area on Monday, I was really surprise to see a herd of white cows. It was the first time I have ever seen any and was not sure what the breed was.
Being curious about what they were, I asked the local Amish man what he knew. He explained that they were called British White's. Typically they have all white bodies with black noses and black tipped ears.
After reading a little about them, they apparently are a very docile cattle and anicent breed. These cows were looking very interested in me too. I guess they might be wondering what I was doing taking their picture or maybe more likely if I had some food for them. Knowing this is a docile type cow is always a good thing. Since frequently when showing rural properties, they have cattle on them. Yep, that is something you city Realtors don't have to deal with. However, I do always like to know where they are and if any are bulls. My favorite question to ask the landowner is: "Are there any Elmer's out there?" You see the Black Angus Cattle, which are more typical here, are definitely not docile. You do want to know if any are on the land.
Now that I have had a look at these cows, I think I now recall also seeing this breed in Americana folk-art paintings. Must be a more popular breed of cattle in the eastern states, anyone know if that is so?
