Thank You Humane Society & Petsmart

KittenThis weekend, our family adopted a new family member.

Meet Thor, our kitten. We thought he'd need a tough name to live with Aslan, our mean tabby. The rest of the pets are pretty laid back.

The "rest of the pets" are two dogs and two cats. When I told Dad we adopted a kitten, he said (sarcastically), "That's just what you needed." I said (brightly, ignoring sarcasm), "Yeah, I know!" :o)

You might remember that I wrote about creativity earlier and one of my suggestions was to take in a new family member. Perhaps, if I really stretch the point, Thor was a business investment? ;o)

I'd like to thank Mike Miske of the Putnam County Humane Society for helping us with the adoption. He kind of knew me already, he was (and is) a volunteer at our local animal shelter where I volunteered myself before going back to work. He also remembered my post on the Humane Society's thrift shop, Paws & Shop.

Still, he asked me a long list of questions about how we care for our pets, which was very natural and came across as polite conversation. I appreciated that they prefer homes where cats stay indoors (as ours do) and will not adopt out to someone who says they will declaw their kitty. (I use Softpaws instead.) They will call to check on Thor and may even stop by to visit. They really do care about their animals beyond the adoption, and I appreciate that.

I also want to thank Petsmart. I think very highly of them for making a nice adoption area in each store, then donating the use of that space to local Humane Societies and animal shelters. They do not make money off the adoption of these pets, and they even gave little Thor a free bag of kitten food as a gift.

Thor is settling in nicely, learning that the doggies make good friends and that our mean cat Aslan does NOT. It's kitten season now and there are lots of cats and kittens that need good homes. Cats are best enjoyed in multiples, so if you have a little spare room, maybe you'd like to think about adding to your family.

We just did, and we couldn't be happier about it! (With the possible exception of Aslan.)
