Thank You Humane Society & Petsmart

KittenThis weekend, our family adopted a new family member.

Meet Thor, our kitten. We thought he'd need a tough name to live with Aslan, our mean tabby. The rest of the pets are pretty laid back.

The "rest of the pets" are two dogs and two cats. When I told Dad we adopted a kitten, he said (sarcastically), "That's just what you needed." I said (brightly, ignoring sarcasm), "Yeah, I know!" :o)

You might remember that I wrote about creativity earlier and one of my suggestions was to take in a new family member. Perhaps, if I really stretch the point, Thor was a business investment? ;o)

I'd like to thank Mike Miske of the Putnam County Humane Society for helping us with the adoption. He kind of knew me already, he was (and is) a volunteer at our local animal shelter where I volunteered myself before going back to work. He also remembered my post on the Humane Society's thrift shop, Paws & Shop.

Still, he asked me a long list of questions about how we care for our pets, which was very natural and came across as polite conversation. I appreciated that they prefer homes where cats stay indoors (as ours do) and will not adopt out to someone who says they will declaw their kitty. (I use Softpaws instead.) They will call to check on Thor and may even stop by to visit. They really do care about their animals beyond the adoption, and I appreciate that.

I also want to thank Petsmart. I think very highly of them for making a nice adoption area in each store, then donating the use of that space to local Humane Societies and animal shelters. They do not make money off the adoption of these pets, and they even gave little Thor a free bag of kitten food as a gift.

Thor is settling in nicely, learning that the doggies make good friends and that our mean cat Aslan does NOT. It's kitten season now and there are lots of cats and kittens that need good homes. Cats are best enjoyed in multiples, so if you have a little spare room, maybe you'd like to think about adding to your family.

We just did, and we couldn't be happier about it! (With the possible exception of Aslan.)

She's baaaaaack!  =)  Glad to meet your new kitty and to see you splashing again.  I need to have a talk with Jeff.  He's keeping you way too busy (and happy).  This is a really sweet post.

Awe!  Thor is very cute!  Many years ago, my daughter wanted a kitty and we went to Petsmart to find one.  You are correct, the people involved with it were very helpful and caring.  Also, the charge for adoption was a good deal.  A healthy pet with all it's shots plus the cost for spading included.  Give Thor a scratch under the chin for me.

Great post! Speaking of kitten season...I just found one the other night on my front porch. It was a black w/ green eyes sleeping next to my clematis plant. I picked her up and called one of my friends and she took her in. Later a few nights ago I found another one that is beautiful too! My friend took that one in till we can find a home for it. Some neighbors just moved I  think they left them behind. The first one checked out healthy at the vet so...help me find a home for this one! His other front leg is all white. Anyone interested can contact me thru my profile here. Thanks!

ooooooooh, Lizette, what a cute kitten!  I hope you find a home for the other one too.

Awwww...what a cute kitty!  Just keep posting here okay Sarah?!  Don't ever leave okay!  I know you're very busy but we're still important to you too....right?

Just practicing....haha.

Maggie - It's not all Jeff's fault, work finally picked up and the kids are busy at school wrapping things up there.  And since I've already blogged somewhere else, I feel like I've met my quota!  LOL!

Cynthia - I'm so glad you mentioned the charge, I meant to touch on that, too!  We paid only $35 for Thor and he's already been neutered and had his first set of shots.  Can't beat that!  I'll give him his chin scratch from Aunt Cynthia.  :o)

Lizette - What a sweetie!!  Thanks for posting his picture!  Have you done a post about him?  Might find him a home that way!  (I'm subscribed to you but I haven't seen it if you have, I'm missing a lot around here lately though!)

Sally - LOL!!  Staying here, don't worry!

Ok, Sarah I have to ask! Exactly what are Soft Paws? Cute kitty by the way!

Sarah, congrats on the new family member! What a cutie! I'm glad everyone is getting along :)

Sarah, I'm glad things are going well.  And I know all about the quota feeling.  That's what's been keeping me from finishing my other project!  lol

Congratulations on your new addition, and just in time for Adopt a Cat Month June 2007!

Kitten season is in the air.  This is the time when thousands of kittens are surrendered to shelters around the country, and many shelters just don't have the room or staff to care for the surge.   Humane Societies are very special places, staffed by pet loving people who work very hard for homeless pets each and every day.  But they can't do it all by themselves.  It takes special people like you who welcome a new furry face into their homes to help save a life.

Have fun with your new little one.

Awwww, Thor is too cute!  The more the merrier in a house!  Enjoy his two speeds:  Asleep. and Raring to go!

Danny - Click on the link in the post and it will tell you more about Softpaws.  They're little plastic caps that you can glue on over cat claws.  It's not as hard as it sounds.

Lysa - So far, so good!  The cats are even warming up to him somewhat now.

Maggie - We can only do so much!!  And Active Rain gives us such good positive reinforcement ... !

Molly - I didn't even know about adopt a cat month!!  I'll have to do a local post about that as well!  Thanks!

Deborah - Those ARE his two speeds!  LOL!  Both are adorable, too.
