Things to Do in Alameda

ERIC KOS AND DENNIS EVANOSKY
Things to Do in Alameda usually appears on Fridays. This is a special notice. If you haven’t seen my blogs about the Alameda Walks tours which sometimes feature Dennis Evanosky and Eric J. Kos and their history tours, now is your chance to see them live and in color. Dennis and Eric are the publishers of the Alameda Sun and local “know it alls” about Alameda history. See them on Wednesday, January 18 at the Alameda Main Library, 1550 Oak Street from 6:30 to 8pm.

Dennis and Eric have billed their talk a “Balloon Flight over Webster Street in the Year 1888” using historic maps, photographs and illustrations. They will “fly” over Neptune Beach, the Croll’s Building, early businesses, the two railroads in existence then and some of the colorful characters who help create our delightful home town. The two "historian" are really good at making history fun and entertaining. Below is a video I took of Dennis and Eric leading an Alameda Walks tour.
Things to Do in Alameda is all about events for the whole family to enjoy in Alameda. I write about Things to do in Alameda every Friday, so if you like what you see here, please come back for more or visit me on Facebook.

AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE - THE ALAMEDA FOOD BANK
The Alameda Food Bank, a totally volunteer service in 2010 provided services to an average of 1,350 individual recipients per month from the Food Bank’s office/warehouse. The Food Bank has set a goal of providing 1000 turkeys or hams to their recipients this holiday season. They have nearly reached that goal. But the need is still there and they ask the people of Alameda to continue to donate turkeys and hams.
According to their missions statement "The Alameda Food Bank's mission is to provide nutritious food to the low-income residents of the City of Alameda on a non-discriminating basis. The Alameda Food Bank is a private, non-affiliated, non-profit, tax-exempt agency. Board members and virtually all staff are dedicated volunteers from the community."

I am proud to say that my real estate office, Gallagher & Lindsey, Inc. Realtors, is one the seven designated drop off points for the Alameda Food Bank.

The Food Bank was founded in 1977 and originally operated out of a closet in the back room of a church. Last year the Food Bank’s fifty regular volunteers.

The Food Bank has become one of Alameda’s primary social service organizations operating cost effectively to provide low-income residents of Alameda with a "five-day supply of nutritionally balanced groceries, at no cost to the recipients. In addition to its regular food distribution program, the Food Bank is the Alameda distribution site for USDA government surplus food and also acts as a comprehensive information and referral service, advising our clients of the availability of other social services."
An Attitude of Gratitude - The Alameda Food Bank is a lifeline for some families who are living on a subsistence income. An Attitude of Gratitude - The Alameda Food Bank is a lifeline for some families who are living on a subsistence income.

ALAMEDA MARKET REPORT - THE WEST END
ALAMEDA MARKET REPORT THE WEST END The West End of Alameda is mostly residential with the bustling Webster Street business district providing commercial services and a variety of restaurants. The former Navy base which occurpied a large portion of the West End is now called Alameda Point. It's where the Alameda Antiques by the Bay is held monthly. You can get any antique from jewelry to furniture to antique toys to anything you ever wanted at Antiques by the Bay. It is a nice way to spend a Sunday morning, enjoying the crisp early morning air with lots of vendors selling delicious foods.
The West End has been considered the weak sister to the East End. That is not the case any more. Bayport residential community, the new Ruby Bridges school and the tenants of Alameda Point have brought a vibrancy to the West End that wan't there before.
Homes on the West End run the gamut from 1880's Victorian to the new Bayport development. There are presently 10 homes for sale in the West End ranging from $439,000.00 for a 3 bedroom home built in 1906 to $599,000.00 for a 4 bedroom home built in 1910.

In this case, the higher the price the greater the days on the market. The average and median priced homes show the days on the market to be more than two months which is the norm for this time of year.

GOOD NEWS ALAMEDA CONDOS UNDER $200,000 As of today there are 15 condos under $200,000 for sale in Alameda. Half (8) have been on the market for more than 45 days. Rates are low, so it is still a good time for buyers to buy a condo in Alameda.
The Monthly Supply of Inventory of condo priced less than $200,000 had declined from the July, 2010 high of 6.5 months to the present Monthly Supply Inventory of a little over 3 months.
MSI figure represents the time in months it would take to sell the current inventory. The graph shows that the inventory is experiencing a slight upward trend after a downward trend of 6 months. This is still a buyers market.
Nine of the units in Alameda are in the Park Webster Complex at the foot of Webster and Central Avenue. There are one and two bedroom units in this complex which is near Crab Cove and Robert Crown Memorial Beach.
