Attention all mid-century architecture fans! Here's your chance to discover Borrego Springs!
| A mid-century architectural tour showcasing architecturally and historically significant homes in Borrego Springs. |
Located just an hour and a half from San Diego, and two hours from Los Angeles, Borrego Springs is a Southern California resort community largely developed during the 1950's and surrounded by the Anza Borrego State Park, the largest state park in the United States. Borrego Springs, like it's better known sister to the north of Palm Springs, has been a retreat for artists, actors and architects.
Unlike Palm Springs however, Borrego remains less crowded, more natural, less developed and offers life at a slower more leisured pace. This site, and its information is a work in progress and will continue to evolve. We hope you will contribute your thoughts, ideas and knowledge of Borrego's past and help. It's a legacy that should we chose to reserve, will provide great enjoyment for the future.

San Diego Desert Wildflowers Part 4
The Impossible Fish
Many thousands of years ago pupfish lived in the Borrego Desert along with the camel, sloths, and mammoths. There are very few wild populations left and there is a pool of them at the Park Headquarters in Borrego. These pupfish are very adaptable to their environments and can live in fresh water or salt water, they thrive in ice cold or extreme hot environments, and can survive in oxygen rich or poor water. The Salton Sea in Anza Borrego is one of these little fish's last habitats.
We watched the sun set over the mountains and headed back through Julian on our way to a friends house in EastLake Chula Vista. We were treated with the rise of water from the recent San Diego rains in a much depleted Lake Cuyamaca. We were also treated with a little wildlife as it was starting to get dark. Five deer were in the road ahead of us and as we slowed down to watch them they pranced off into the pine trees. San Diego is a very diverse and great place to live. This same day my daughter was surfing with her friend in Pacific Beach. Deserts, mountains, beaches all in the same day, that's San Diego Living.
San Diego desert wildflowers are a spectacular site to behold. This year in San Diego we had a good amount of rain and the San Diego deserts were no exception. My wife and I went out to Anza Borrego Desert State Park on Sunday March 9th 2008. I had heard from some folks that the desert flowers were starting to bloom and since I hadn't been out to Borrego Springs for quite some time I thought it would be a nice afternoon with my wife. It was.

San Diego Desert Wildflowers Part 3
While at the Anza Borrego Desert State Park they were celebrating their 75th year anniversary. The park comprises over 1,000 square miles of San Diego County desert and mountain country since 1932 - 1933. Coyote Canyon is packed with many blooming wildflowers and many more that are in buds. Indian Head Mountain is the large mountain northwest of the Park Headquarters. The park in early March 2008 was packed with photographers like me taking some great pictures of the desert landscape.
The prominent colors of the flowers were yellow and purple with splashes of white. The cacti and succulents looked like they were ready to burst out, but exactly when, no one knows. There is an Anza Borrego Desert Wildflower Hotline phone number at 760-767-4648 to keep San Diego desert enthusiasts updated. I was very impressed with desert and was there at dusk. As the sun set it cast a great glow on the desert.

I made my first trip to Borrego Springs this weekend and had an absolutely fabulous time. I went to go see my friend Debbie Israel Wiens in her stellar performance as Chelsea in On Golden Pond at the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center. The show was excellent and each one of the cast members did a great job in their roles. I can't say enough about how great the show was. It was an interesting audience too since most of the attendees were in the "golden years" if you will. There were various comments from the peanut gallery about how the nitroglycerin bottle was obviously not correct, and how Fred the stage manager wore black so you couldn't see him moving props between scenes that made the show that much more entertaining!!
I couldn't have planned my trip better because in addition to the perfect weather (as in no need to wear a jacket at night and not too hot during the day either) the wildflowers were in bloom!! This is something that only happens once every three to five years depending on if the rain is just right. It is amazing how beautiful and majestic God's beauty can be!!
