A walk along the Carlsbad boardwalk at the edge of the continent is a tremendous pleasure particularly with the weather we are enjoying right now.
OK, so it's not really a "boardwalk" as one finds along the Jersey shore or Coney Island, but concrete.
And it's not lined by shops and restaurants as I recall part of the NJ board walk to be, especially in Ocean City and Atlantic City.
But having a place to stroll along the beach to enjoy the views of the ocean, the neighborhoods, and the Coast Road is pretty special.
And given the number of people out walking, especially in our great weather, it's clear many find the Carslbad boardwalk to be a place to be with friends, family, dogs and babies in strollers. Lots of runners, too.
Not only do you get to feel the salt air and sun but the views are very pleasant with lots of photographic opportunities tfor camera buffs.
And today was a great time to test out my new Sony.
Want a bit of exercise?
Have breakfast at one of the eateries at the edge of town (Cafe Elysa is a fave - try their coconut vanilla custard stuffed french toast) and then take a round-trip walk to get rid of those calories - about 1.4 miles one way, almost to the power plant. And there is a fair amount of free parking along the Coast Road on the ocean side - but get there early on a good weather day.
The jetties just south of Tamarack Beach are a great place to watch the waves and the sea birds as the tide rushes in or out under the bridge to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. You will often see the brown pelicans flying overhead and can enjoy the surfers if the ocean is not too calm and folks on the beach.

It’s time again for the famous Carlsbad Village Faire 2011, the 38th anniversary, to be held in downtown Carlsbad Village on November 6, 2011 on the north side of Carlsbad Village Drive along State Street and Grand Avenue, as well as some adjacent side streets.
The Carlsbad Village Faire, held twice a year, in the Spring and Fall, is reportedly the largest outdoor one-day fair in the US – pretty impressive for a smallish seaside town. Typically the weather is pretty pleasant this time of year, and if history has anything to say you can expect large crowds, over 100,000.
The Carlsbad Village Faire 2011 will open at 8 am and run until 4 pm. You can expect some pretty darn good shopping for the holidays, or whatever, with 850+ vendors offering everything you can imagine. It’s a mobile outdoor mall!
Kids are sure to have fun, too, even if they get bored with tagging along with the parents shopping – the Carlsbad Village Faire has rides, tons of food of all kinds (I’m told 50+ foodie booths), music, and a pancake breakfast. And the classic beer and wine garden – sorry no kiddos.
And of course all the Carlsbad Village shops and restaurants along State Street, Grand Avenue and Carlsbad Village Drive are open as well of places to explore – something to please every member of the family.
As with many of the Carlsbad Fairs, parking can be a challenge due to the crowds, so unless you have the patience to spend time driving around looking for that elusive parking spot, make use of the 2 shuttles, running from the Sears store at the Westfield Shopping Plaza near the 78 and El Camino Real, and the Poinsettia Coaster Station on Avenida Encinas. Shuttles run every 15 minutes.
Don’t miss one of the country’s best outdoor one-day fairs this Sunday, November 6 – fall is a beautiful season at the beach in Carlsbad, and the Carlsbad Village Faire 2011 promises to be another winner.
