Gas Prices, the Middle East and Emissions Ain't Got Nothin' on Seaweed and E. coli

Yes, gas prices are unpredictable, and as of this blog post the price of crude oil is high and rising. Yes, the Middle East is strained with international relations. Yes, Iran uses their 3rd largest oil reserves as political clout to purport their extreme religious and societal views. And yes, the combustible engine, even with all it's emission controls, still pollutes an already strained ozone and global environment.

But never fear, Super E. coli and his sidekick Seaweed are here!

Apparently researchers have developed a genetically engineered stomach microbe, also known as E. coli, that can convert seaweed into ethanol bio-fuel. Can you imagine the ramifications?!

First, ethanol engines are not only already designed, but perfected to the point of challenging standard fuel engines. In fact, you can use ethanol in regular engines, too! I've tried it, but in small quantities (too much would burn up an engine). You can even convert your existing standard fuel engine into an ethanol fuel engine for a couple hundred bucks.

Second, seaweed grows in two thirds of the world's oceans. It grows fast, easy, doesn't require water or fertilizing, and won't exhaust crops or crop lands typically used for growing food.

Third, every country in the world could start up operations to cultivate seaweed to use with this new E. coli strain to feed it's society's energy needs.

Honestly, I do not know the effects of ethanol emissions on the environment compared to gasoline, but I would be very interested to find out.

The only down-side I can see at this point is a bad "The World Ended Due to a Genetically Engineered E. coli Strain and Now the World is Full of Zombies" movie.
