Safeway or the Highway!
Safeway MarinThis is probably not news to many, but I noticed recently that local Safeway stores have begun charging customers for bags at checkout. Just like check-in at the airport, you are now required to input how many bags you'll need, and you are charged accordingly. All I can say is, "It's about time!"
When I look back at my childhood (in the '70's) I can certainly note the vast progress that has been made in awareness and resourcefulness when it comes to re-use and recycling. There is still so much more that can be accomplished. Do you remember the days when people would just throw bottles and cans in the trash? Now, when I see that happen I almost wince in pain. How about those first plastic shopping bags --- the ones as thick as the paper bags? Now they're so thin you can see through them and they're many times as strong.
Marin SafewayI hope that ten years down the road we are looking back at this era and cringing all over, having come to a new realization and definition of resourcefulness.
Habits change slowly, but the transformation is sped when it's tied to money. Safeway should be recognized for taking this step and working to influence the behavior of their customers in a responsible manner.
