"And They're Off" ... Del Mar's 72nd Horse Race Season Starts Today!!!

It's here, the opening day for Del Mar Horse Race Season!  Today is such a fun day because Opening Day is also the hat contest day.  You will see gorgeous and often outrageous hats and fascinators (think the recent Royal Wedding).  Opening Day is definitely a "See and Be Seen Day".  A lot of beautiful high fashion outfits will be on display, including the amazing colorful silks the jockeys wear.  Del Mar is expecting 45,000 people to enjoy Opening Day so if you're planning on coming, arrive early!

This is the song Bing Crosby sang.  He and several of his Hollywood friends were the founders of Del Mar racing in 1937.  Many of them lived in Rancho Santa Fe in those days.  We still have a big Hollywood connection as several TV shows and movies have filmed at Del Mar.  The seaside racetrack is beautiful and has ideal weather.  Once you are here you see why celebrities, professional athletes, CEOs, entrepreneurs and even Royalty love it.

Races are five days per week, Wednesday through Sunday through September 7, 2011. Del Mar is rewarding owners from other states and countries to bring their racehorses to California to run.  This program attracts great talent.  Probably why Del Mar, this year, will host six designated Breeder's Cup Challenge races!

Okay, beside racing what else is there to do or see at the Del Mar Racetrack?  Fabulous music!  The Racetrack moved the Seaside Stage to allow more fans to enjoy the post race concerts.  Also, the new position boasts wonderful views of the majestic Pacific Ocean which is basically the backyard for Del Mar Racetrack.  Here are the talented performers this year...

Also on Fridays, is the Smirnoff Lounge, which opens at 3 PM.  How about starting the day at the track?  Breakfast is served and you can watch the morning workouts.  I have heard the breakfast is terrific, they have big portions of great food and it is reasonably priced, around $10.  Plus, not that many people do this so you can get closer to the jockeys and ponies and really get a good idea on who you might want to place a bet on later. 

Other fun events?  Vote (or run?) for Miss Del Mar Cougar July 29.  Gourmet Food Truck Day August 20 (yum!).  Weiner Dog Nationals Sept 5.  Beer Fest Sept 4.  There are way too many events (in addition to high quality racing) to mention here.  Be sure and check out the website for Del Mar Race Track at this link.
