Today is the 100th Anniversary of the opening of the Standard Oil Refinery in the City of El Segundo.
Prior to El Segundo's incorporation in 1917, this area was part of the original Spanish land grant for "Rancho Sausal Redondo" ("Ranch of the Round Clump of Willows") in 1822, a rancho with a land mass of nearly 25,000 acres which extended from the areas as far north of what is now Playa del Rey, as far east as Inglewood, and as far south as Hermosa Beach. The land consisted of wheat and barley fields on which cattle and sheep grazed. El Segundo's early history is described at South Bay History.
In May 1911, five men representing the Standard Oil Company arrived here: Richard J. Hanna and J.E. Howell of the Eclipse refinery of Franklin, Pennsylvania and John Black, Henry Foster and William Rheem from the Standard Oil refinery in Point Richmond a city 18 miles east of San Francisco). They were surveying the area as a potential site for their next oil refinery. What was required was an area adjacent to the seashore so their tankers could have appropriate access. The undeveloped nature of the site appealed to them because land costs had to be kept to a minimum. Also, the site had to be close to populated areas so it could attract enough employees.
The "clump of willows" was just what Mr. Hanna's team was looking for.

Lastly, this new site needed a name. Richard Hanna's wife, Virginia, deemed this expanse as "El Segundo", (Spanish for "the second one,") because the site was to be Standard Oil's second oil refinery in California (The Point Richmond refinery was already christened as "El Primero"). Sometime later, a group of proud but unknown citizens had nicknamed it "El Segundo a nada" (Spanish for 'second to none').
Standard Oil bought 840 acres of this land on June 11. The refinery opened for business, just five and a half months later, on November 27.

The city remained a one-industry town until the 1920s, when Mine's Field, a landing strip used by early barnstormers, was chosen as the site for the new Los Angeles Municipal Airport. Then, in the mid-1950s, Southern California Edison purchased a 43-acre site for a major electrical generating station.
Naturally, the addition of the Los Angeles International Airport, which officially opened in 1930, had a major role in turning El Segundo into a aerospace center. The likes of Douglas Aircraft, Hughes Aircraft, Northrop and North American Aviation (Rockwell) all located in El Segundo during the 1940s and 1950s. Most of these aircraft-related companies would eventually transition into the aerospace/defense industry. In 1960, the creation of The Aerospace Corporation and Los Angeles Air Force Base gave El Segundo the esteemed title of "The Aerospace Capital of the World." El Segundo is also the headquarters location for Computer Sciences Corporation and Mattel Toys.
Today, the city encompasses over five square miles, spanning from the Los Angeles International Airport on the north, to the Chevron Refinery on the south, to the Pacific Ocean on the west and Aviation Boulevard on the east. The city's population has leveled off at approximately 16,500 residents, which has enabled the community to preserve the small town intimacy and charm.

The El Segundo Concert Band and the El Segundo High School Band on Saturday will put on an outdoor Winter Wonderland celebration - complete with snow and other wintry activities. Yes, I said snow, I know you are thinking this is Southern California, how could that be? Well you just have to come down and see it for yourself. Dress warm, remember it gets cold after the sun sets near the Pacific Ocean. The event will be held on December 4th from 3 to 8 p.m. in the high school's quad. There will be a holiday bazaar with food booths, holiday merchandise and festive music. After last year’s rave reviews, winter will once again blanket the High School’s grounds. Not only will there be a good time for all ages, you can even start your holiday shopping, since there will be 40 booths with merchandize. The day's events will culminate in a holiday finale of a performance by maestro Steven Allen Fox and the El Segundo Community Concert Band.

Plaza El Segundo is your stereo typical Southern California Mall (http://www.plazaelsegundo.com/index.htm ), Palm Trees & Sunshine and ofcourse Eye Candy Buildings, sprawling parking space and I mean plenty of parking.
Where else can you have shopping for everything from books at Borders (http://www.borders.com/online/store/Home ) to sporting goods at Dicks Sporting Goods or Appliances at Best Buy ( http://www.bestbuy.com/ ) and have a great lunch while you take a break from shopping.
When I say lunch, I mean LA's Trendiest mall eating places such as The Veggie Grill( http://www.veggiegrill.com/ )for the Vegetarian Pallet, California Fish and Grill ( http://www.cafishgrill.com ), or The Counter ( http://www.thecounterburger.com/ ) to name a few.
Now if you like Kitchen Stores one of my favorite is here: Sur la Table of course ( http://www.surlatable.com/ after you did all that, then you need to go buy your groceries at Whole Foods ( http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/elsegundo/ ).
In addition to the great outdoors you will see a distinct California architecture with a collection of steel sculptures, jet fountains and outdoor seating areas.
Plan on spending an afternoon and make it a fun event.
This is an easy place to get to no matter what part of the greater Los Angeles area you are coming from. Head to LAX and then stay on Sepulveda Blvd South at Park Place it is North of Rosecrans Blvd. Cannot miss it. Look for these pictures I posted and you will find it.
