Grass Valley is situated roughly half way between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevadas. It was thriving back in the gold rush days of the 1850s. It now has a population of 11,150, and sits at 2,450 elevation.
It is a pretty ideal location, as it is above the fog belt, but rarely gets snow.
It is surrounded by forest, with beautiful tall pine trees.
There are several fine restraurants, two movie theatres, and many excellent wineries in the Historical Downtown area. Not too far away is the South Fork of the Yuba River, and this provides a very scenic area to go to and enjoy the day swimming or picnicing at the shore - all of which is free if you know where to go.
Real Estate is a great bargain here, and it would not be too difficult to find excellent homes for $150 per squrare foot or less, often with panoramic views.
If you want to avoid the rat race and stress of big city living, Grass Valley, and the neighboring Nevada City make excellent choices.
When you do need to visit some bigger stores, Costco is only about an hour away in Roseville, which is just outside Sacramento.
Sacramento, the State Capitol, of course has all the shopping, the major airport, and every restaurant imaginable. Equally close is Lake Tahoe and the Nevada state line, where a quick trip can bring you to the ski slopes and to world class entertainment at Lake Tahoe south shore or into Nevada, with Reno close by.
Grass Valley has long been known to be a haven for retirees, but over the past few years, there has been an influx of "young folks," meaning those in their 40s and 50s. With the advancements in technology, many people can now work out of their homes and still make a very good income. When that is the case, it's hard to beat living in such beautiful surroundings, and not be bound to the hassles of big city living.
Come give Grass Valley a good look!
