31st U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition, The 31st U.S. Open Sandcastle Championship is this weekend, July 23 & 24, in Imperial Beach at Pier Plaza (intersection of Seacoast Drive and Evergreen Avenue: There will be more than forty teams competing for the title of Master's Champion, but look for either I.B. Posse from Imperial Beach or Archisand from Orange County to take the top two positions as they have done since 2000. Of course, I.B. Posse obviously has home sand advantage! More than 350,000 people are expected to attend, and there will be 122 vendors providing everything from food and drink to this and that. The fun starts Friday night at 8:00 p.m. with the Sandcastle Dance for age 21 and up at the Imperial Beach Boys and Girls Club. Dance lasts until midnight. There is a Street Fair from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. On Saturday, from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. there is the traditional Kids-N-Kastles Competition for children 12 and under. The U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition will be from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday with teams competing for more than $21,000 in cash prizes. Tides wash away the sandcastles in the late afternoon, so sandcastles will only be available for gawking until 4:00 p.m. I suggest getting there early to watch the teams build their sandcastles; that's more than half the excitement! Here is a slide show of last year's event:

This is one of a series titled I've put together a slide show below, but it doesn't do justice to the magnitude of what these sand sculptors do. They come from all over the world, and some of them are professionals, meaning that all they do is travel the world building sandcastles in competitive events. Something about that just doesn't seem fair. The U.S. Open is always held in Imperial Beach, and I believe it is always the first full weekend in August, so if you need a vacation in August 2011, I can recommend one Imperial Beach and the 31st U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. ♫♪♫♫♪♫ If you're looking for a great real estate agent in San Diego, well, I'm available 24/7, so feel free to contact me by phone or email. Read others in this series by clicking on Out & About. This past weekend in Imperial Beach saw tens of thousands of people invade the Imperial Beach pier and sands for the 30th U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. Along with lots of vendors selling unusual wares, there were many more vendors selling fair-style food, of which two of my favorites are the Oriental shishkabobs and the grilled corn on the cob.
I walked through the vendor and food area once (and got a shishkabob and some grilled corn on the cob for lunch) and walked through the competition area three times, twice to see the sandcastles as they were being built, and then once to see the completed products.

This is one of a series titled The 30th Annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition gets underway this weekend at Imperial Beach, the most southwesterly city in the continental United States, even more southwesterly than your Mission Valley condo! Competition is open to amateur sand carving teams as well, with everyone competing for more than $21,000 in cash prizes. Competition concludes at 2:00 p.m., after which awards will be presented.
Viewing is open until 4:00 p.m., although you can stick around outside of the viewing area for several hours and watch the high tide wash away the creations. This is when cameras with telephoto lenses come in handy. If you've never been to a sandcastle competition, this is the one not to miss. However, upwards of 350,000 people crowd into this small beach town each year for the competition, so carpooling or public transportation is highly recommended.

On Saturday, August 7, at 9:00 a.m., the street festival begins with vendors, arts and crafts, entertainment, and food along Seacoast Drive, which will be closed to traffic for the event.

Saturday afternoon will feature the Kids-N-Kastles Competition, but the big stuff begins at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday when the professional sand carvers begin building their "sand castles" (very much a misnomer for these professionals) in an effort to acquire the title of Master's Champion.
