The air is crackling with excitement here in Santa Barbara as summer wanes and autumn approaches. As the tourists head back home, the big kids are back, and they are off to college. The town is abuzz with students from all over the United States and the world. In the last week we have heard many languages spoken, Swedish, Croatian, Japanese, French and Russian.

We have 7 institutions of higher learning in Santa Barbara. The best known one is UCSB, aka University of California at Santa Barbara. Here are the first three.

University of California, Santa Brarbara has five schools and colleges, the largest of which is the College of Letters and Science, serving undergraduate and graduate students. Here is the link to the school calendar as published by the Registrar's Office.

Pacifica Graduate Institute, with two campuses nestled between the foothills and the Pacific Ocean, a few miles south of Santa Barbara, CA, offers six graduate degrees. Here is their calendar link.

Formally known as "Brooks Institute of Photography," Brooks Institute offers four majors, two certificate programs and two graduate programs. Here is their calendar.

Wishing everyone excellent grades and lots of fun!

VIDEO-January in Isla Vista, CA

I just returned from a quick visit to Isla Vista, CA where Rachael is heading next week, starting college in Santa Barbara CA later in January.

Rachael and her AudiSilly as it might sound, Rachael and I drove down in her cute little Audi after my work day on Friday so we could be in town to accept delivery of her bed! If I didn't like to drive, it would be ridiculous, but the 300 miles are gorgeous, taking us through the high-tech center Silicon Valley, down the length of the Salinas Valley, dubbed the salad bowl of America, to the wine town of Paso Robles, past San Luis Obispo (home of the highly regarded Cal Poly University) to the beach towns of Pismo Beach and Avila Beach, and on to Isla Vista, a couple of miles short of Santa Barbara. Plus, we had time for some good chats and sharing of dreams and plans. All good stuff.

The next day, shortly before our 1:00 PM departure, I wandered to this beach park about 3 blocks away from her apartment.

Pretty nice for a January day, wouldn't you say?

And this is one of the things that makes living in San Mateo County and the Silicon Valley so great -- an easy weekend trip to another world. Mentally refreshing, and I'm back to work tomorrow.

If you're thinking of settling here, take a look at the Facebook page, Peninsula.Living, where you'll find ideas for other adventures in our own backyard, and while you're there I hope you'll 'like' it.
