Moray eel

Meet Larry, Curly and Moe. They are three Moray eels found at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla. Often referred to as mosters of the sea, these curious creatures are not actually the mosters they are thought to be. Their shape and habits do however give them some real advantages for survival.

A few facts about the Moray eels:

While they have large eyes, they have poor vision and compensate with an acute sense of smell.

Moray eels are rarely found swimming about in the daytime because they are nocturnal. They hide in crevices and snatch prey as it passes by.

Moray eels are most often found in warmer tropical waters in coral reefs but can also occasionally be found in colder waters.

Green Moray eels are actually blue but a yellow slimy coating used to help them slide through rough rocky or coral areas and that yellowy slime makes them appear green.

Moray ells are not typically aggressive but will strike if frightened or threatened. They typically do not bite unless provoked but their strong jaws and sharp teeth can bite through fingers or hands.

Moray eels are actually fish and not reptiles despite their snake like appearance.

There are well over 200 different species and can range in size from under one foot to over 7 feet long.

A moray eel is carnivorous and their diets consist only of meat. Fish, mollusks and crabs are their main source of food.

Moray eels can swim both backwards and forwards. They can lunge both backward and forward with great speed which increases their threat if startled or provoked.

Many other eels produce a toxic poison that discourages them from being a source of food. Moray eels while they do not produce this poison, are still considered toxic and can cause serious illness if consumed.

Discover San Diego: Torrey Pines

Torrey Pines State Park named after the rare Torrey Pine Tree, (which only grows in 2 places in the whole world: San Diego and Santa Rosa Island). In 1899 George Marston, a city father, convinced the other city fathers to create a public park and protect this 1200-acre coastal area located between coastal La Jolla and
coastal Del Mar.

About 1910, Miss Ellen Browning Scripps bought and willed this area back to people of San Diego to ensure it would forever be protected and cared for. Miss Scripps later created the Torrey Pines Lodge, originally a restaurant, today is a volunteer run Visitor’s Center.

During WWII, about 1940, the U.S. Army leased over 700 acres of Torrey Pines Mesa from the City of San Diego to be used for training purposes known as Camp Callan; an anti-aircraft artillery training center. The military had to guarantee that no part of the park would be damaged. The camp closed in 1945. The buildings were torn down and used for lumber to build homes for veterans and the area later, about 100 acres of this area became today’s world famous Torrey Pines Public Golf Course.

The home of the Buick Open the 2008 US Open and more.
There are 2 courses, the North Course & South Course on over 100 coastal acres, created by legendary course architect William F. Bell Sr. and Bell's son, William F., who would ensure his father's vision was realized (after his father’s death) by overseeing the completion of the North and South courses at Torrey Pines.
Off the 18th Hole at Torrey Pines Public Golf Course is the beautiful craftsman style resort and spa:

The Lodge at Torrey Pines is San Diego’s only 5 Diamond Hotel. Formerly the Inn at Torrey Pines, The Evans Family (owners of The Catamaran Hotel, The Bahia Hotel and more in San Diego), built a significant Charles & Henry Green architectural style masterpiece, reminiscent of the turn of the century CA craftsman homes of significance. There are 2 restaurants, swimming pool, a spa, 170 and suites and it’s the home of Tiger Woods when he plays in tournaments at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

World Famous Torrey Pines Gliderport: An amazing cliff top soaring site since 1928. Hang gliding, since the 1960’s became very popular here with enthusiasts from all over the world. Sail-planes, hang gliders are still seen here today, but since the 1980’s; para-gliders seem to dominate the skies here. Whether you are destined to jump off these beautiful cliffs and fly or simply sit and watch, it’s an entertaining place to spend a few hours and the kids will love it! The views are amazing!
