Maybe the best thing about the Tiki Ti bar on Sunset Blvd. in Los Feliz is that it’s the real thing. The place has been there since 1961 when it was opened by Ray Buhen and it is now operated by his son Mike and his two grandsons (Ray passed away in 1999 just a week shy of his 90th birthday). The place remains unchanged, with only 12 bar stools and usually a line out the door every night.

If you check out their web site, it's basically a history of the place, with photos of the original menus, the old mugs, and pics all of the regulars, including those who have passed away over the years. This isn't "marketing," it's just telling a story. The site pulls up it's own "playlist" of tunes that play in the background, including Dean Martin's "Sway," Peggy Lee's "Fever," James Brown's "Superbad." Perfect.

Owner Ray Buhen had a colorful past, arriving in the U.S. from the Phillipines in 1930 at age 21. One of his first jobs was a stint at the Beverly Hills Hotel as a bellboy. But he was quickly promoted to bartender later that year, just as prohibition was coming to an end. He was sent to bartending school by the hotel to learn to mix drinks. Shortly thereafter he ended up at the infamous "Don The Beachcomber’s" frequented by the movie stars, where Ray was cranking out tropical drinks in the back room for the stars.

He continued to bounce around various different “Tiki” bars over the next 20 years, including the Seven Seas across from Grauman’s Theatre and Sugie's Tropics on Rodeo in Beverly Hills (when Sunset Blvd. was still a horse riding trail!) In 1935 MGM was shooting Mutiny on the Bounty and Clark Gable had a tiki bar built to serve the cast during the 4 month shoot. Ray was later brought over to tend bar, serving regulars like Jean Harlow and Charles Laughton. Ray met all the movie stars, mobsters and other movers and shakers of the day, so when he finally opened up his own place, The Tiki Ti, everyone came looking for him.
There are 85 drinks on the menu...and back in the day, every single drink had it’s own special Polynesian mug. If you are overwhelmed with all the drink choices, no problem. You can spin the wheel to let destiny choose for you.

Each drink has a story that lives on today. For example, if you order the ‘Blood and Sand’ the bartender will pour it while yelling “Toro, toro, toro!” Additionally, every Wednesday the signature drink “Ray’s Mistake” is half price until 9:00pm when one of the grandsons rings the ship bell and son Mike makes a toast, as everyone in the bar turns and looks at the picture of Ray Buhen on the wall.

The Tiki Ti is a fun Los Angeles landmark...in fact the Tiki Ti recently received the distinction of being “one of the top 50 Bars in the U.S.” by GQ Magazine. They were one of only two California bars on the list.
The Tiki Ti is located at 4427 Sunset Blvd., Los Feliz, 90027. It's only open Wed - Sun, from 4P-1:30A. But, sometimes there is a sign on the door, "Gone Fishing," and they will be closed...until they're back. There are perks to being a small family business! Another perk is that smoking is permitted, due to the fact that this is a family owned business without employees.

Check it out...but take a cab...those drinks are powerful!

Gelato comes to Los Feliz Village!
Yesterday I highlighted the new Paradis ice cream store, imported from Denmark, serving ice cream that is made fresh every day, with all natural ingredients...and less fat. Today, we’re going to ignore the low fat thing, and hustle on in to Gelato Bar...and it will be worth it!

Gelato Bar arrived in Los Feliz Village located at 1936 Hillhurst Ave. last May, just in time for the summer. I’d discovered their other gelateria, Gelato Bar & Espresso Caffe, in Studio City earlier this year...and very quickly become addicted to the pistachio (I’ve never tasted pistachio like this before...in my life!). Their flavors are very sophisticated, and they will happily offer you up endless tastes, served on silver demitasse spoons.

Gelato Bar is owned by Gail Silverton and her husband Joel Gutman. Gail's sister is Nancy Silverton, of La Brea Bread and Mozza fame. Dang, these chicks have got it together when it comes to killer niche food!
And while Gelato Bar has some of the most extraordinary gelato that I've ever had, it is actually more than just a gelateria, they also serve paninis and...

...and their coffee is amazing!
The beans are from Brazil and Ethiopia...but these aren't just any beans...they buy their coffee from a small roasting company out of Sonoma County, called Ecco Caffe. This company is owned by award winning Andrew Barnett, who provides premium roasts, "including Taste of the Harvest reserve, an heirloom variety from Carvalho Dias, coffee producer and owner of the Fazenda Cachoiera farm in Brazil." Ecco drip coffees are ground and manually brewed by the cup with a "pour over drip system," which delivers the freshest cup of coffee possible.

Killer combination...rich, rich coffee and amazing gelato! For a taste of Italy & Brazil, head on over to Gelato Bar in Los Feliz!

A new, slimmer version of ice cream hits Los Feliz Village in 2011

Paradis Ice Cream moved into Los Feliz village at 1726 N. Vermont in April this year, replacing the Pinkberry store (or Crackberry to the rest of us). Paradis bills itself as “Fresh Ice Cream Made Daily.”

Paradis is a small chain of ice cream shops in Denmark, known for their fresh flavors and natural ingredients. When Mia Pedersen, her boyfriend and her brother moved to LA from Denmark, they decided to import the concept here and struck a deal with the Paradis owners to start the only U.S. franchise stores (there is a store in Montrose and a brand new store this week opening in Long Beach).

Somehow, I don't feel quite so guilty when I'm eating ice cream from Paradis. It tastes better than your typical American fare, and I tell myself that it's good for me.
Wasn't there some study recently about drinking milk and losing inches from your adominal area...? Therefore, eating Paradis ice cream builds strong abs...right? I'm going with it.

5699 HOLLY OAK DR , LOS ANGELES 90068
$1,999,000
Ralph Brown Residence, designed by Phil Brown
Stop the presses...this magnificent Los Feliz mid century home just hit the market, and it is truly stunning. Situated atop of the hills in “The Oaks” section of Los Feliz, the Ralph Brown Residence, by architect Phil Brown is a magnificent example of classic mid century architecture.

This home was built in 1963 by architect Phil Brown for his parents, and has only changed hands twice since then. This home utilizes all of the elements that define this architectural style; floor-to-ceiling walls of glass, oversized rooms, high ceilings, post and beam design, open floor plan. But the best part, is that the home has been beautifully upgraded through the years.

The wrap around decks are wide, at roughly 10 feet, room for alfresco dining and entertaining.

Each of the three bedrooms also has spectacular city views, each with a sliding glass door that opens out to the decks or patio.

Besides the dining area in the "great room" there is also a breakfast room adjacent to the chef's kitchen...with, of course, city views.

This Phil Brown designed, Los Feliz mid century home has it all...stunning architectural bones and pedigree, beautiful upgrades, jaw dropping views, killer location in The Oaks of Los Feliz, and the entire home is bathed in natural sunlight. Win win win.

5757 Valley Oak Dr., Los Feliz, Los Angeles, CA
$1,775,000
_____________________________________________________________________
The Oaks is one of the most elegant areas of the Los Feliz hills in the Los Angeles area, perched up in the Hollywood Hills, just east of Beachwood Canyon. When one of the homes in this gated community goes on the market, it won’t sit for long.

This home has stunning, twinkling city lights views that are highly sought after...and the views are from almost all of the rooms. The pool is a sexy infinity pool, with, of course, the same stunning views. (How could one possibly swim in a pool that doesn’t have city views?!).

The home was built in 1964, towards the end of the mid-century style, but the lines are still clearly influenced by the prevalent architecture of the period.
Love that double height fireplace, and true to the period it sits slightly off center, squared off beautifully, festooned with lava rock.
The baths are beautifully upgraded with a clean, austere feel of modernity. And the kitchen has a clean architectural feel to it, with a great use of color in the design.

The master bedroom is on the ground floor, away from the main hub of the house (put the teenagers in the 2 bedrooms upstairs...providing for some great me time for the parents!). The master bedroom has the same walls of floor to ceiling glass that open up onto the outdoor area and the view beyond.

If you'd like to see this home in person, please call or email me!
