I can spot rotting wood a mile away.

Maybe that’s an exaggeration but I don’t have to poke at the wood to know that there is a dry rot problem. Being a contractor has put me in front of wood damaged by water and soil in thousands of situations. I don’t always need to get up close to see that there is a problem.

Today I had an opportunity to look at some exterior siding and trim damage. Much of the rotted wood members were up on the second story walls, I could get an accurate estimate of damage without spending half to day dragging the ladder around. This is not a flawless method, but with experience in knowing where to look and what to look for, the estimated damages are pretty close.
