Usually I plan my trips to the San Diego Zoo but today I went just because.
I always stop by the meerkats and was able to get this picture of a new little cutie at the Zoo:
I'm not sure who the daddy was, possibly the one in the picture, although he was in a group of four who really looked proud:
That's mommy's feet at the left in the picture.

The San Diego Zoo has five Malayan tigers in residence, but they usually spend most of their time sleeping.
Unfortunately, their sleeping quarters are out of view of the general public.
A recent visit, though, found three of the tigers running and frolicking.
Well, maybe running and frolicking might be putting it a little too strongly, especially for one of them.
You'll understand.
Just enjoy the slide show that I've put together for you. If the slide show here doesn't work on your computer, click here to watch it at slide.com. And remember to put the Zoo and the tigers on your "must see" list of places to go and things to see when you come to the 2009 Convention of the National Association of Realtors in November.

San Diego has many seasons (drought, rain, mudslide, fire, etc.), but one of the most important to us is Tourist Season.
Tourist Season begins Memorial Day weekend and ends Labor Day weekend, and it is the time when the population of the County seems like it tripled from three million to nine million, with the extra six million clogging the freeways, the beaches, and Balboa Park.
Many of our Tourist Season visitors come from Arizona, and we have a propensity to call them Zonies and to joke that during Tourist Season, the population of Phoenix falls to just one person who stays behind to turn the lights on and off each day. Nonetheless, we really do love our Zonies and other tourists because they bring a lot of money to our fair county.
Here for the enjoyment of our visitors is everything you want to know about Balboa Park:
Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in America and the second largest in North America behind Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia. With over 1,200 acres, there's lots to do, from picnicking under the majestic eucalyptus trees, watching volleyball games on weekends, visiting museums, taking in live performances at the Old Globe Theatre, visiting the world-famous San Diego Zoo, and much, much more.
You can see some of it using your Passport to Balboa Park, a $29 pass valid for one week that gets you into 13 Park attractions. Or visit many of the museums on "Free Tuesdays," where various museums offer free admission on a rotating basis. For more information about all that Balboa Park has to offer, log on to balboapark.org.
To see and do everything in Balboa Park would require a good week or more. Following is a list of things to do in Balboa Park.

The Trust for Public Land says that Balboa Park is the third most-visited urban park in the United States, behind Central Park and Chicago's Lincoln Park. The more developed areas of the park, which includes the San Diego Zoo and the buildings from the 1915 Panama-California Exposition and and the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition.
The total cost of the materials was $1,700, but once established, the new landscaping will save 90,000 gallons of water a year, an annual cost savings of about $350.

Balboa Park just north of downtown San Diego is one of the largest urban cultural city parks in the nation with over 1,200 acres. For comparison, Central Park in New York City has 843 acres. It also dates from 1835, making it one of the oldest urban parks.
Much of Balboa Park is still rugged, undeveloped land and is good for hiking and exploring.
Many of those developed areas were landscaped with grass and other plants that require regular watering, and while grass and such plants are beautiful, they really are inappropriate for a desert environment like San Diego. Remember that it's water that defines a desert, not temperature, although many deserts are also hot.
Recently, the San Diego City Parks Director announced that the yard at the 80-year-old Fire Alarm Building in Balboa Park has been converted from a traditional lawn into a drought-friendly landscape
using redwood mulch, pathways of decomposed granite from a San Diego quarry, manzanita, sea dahlia, firecracker shrubs, Douglas iris, penstemon firebird, Cleveland sage, Little Sur shrubs, and Engelmann oaks.
