The Newest National Cemetery | San Diego's Miramar National Cemetery
Memorial Day 2011
This enormous parcel of land as the nations newest national cemetery opened this past March and they interred the newest causalities of the Afghanistan War.
Adjacent to the Miramar Naval Air Station, this cemetery has daily fly overs of jets and helicopters but todays flyover was several vintage planes.
The first soldier that was casket buried here at Miramar National Cemetery is John Smith III and he has a wreath placed in front of the only marker in this section of the cemetery. The other section with the 3 rows of markers as shown in the photo is for urn burials and the lot sizes are smaller.
It will take at least another 18 months to finish all the hardscape and install the many grave markers that will be aligned in perfect unison. The Columbiums are near finished for urn internment. The grounds will transform over the many months ahead and will be quite stunning when the landscaping and trees are added.
Even though this cemetery is still a work in process, I spoke with a number of family members today with sons that were interred this past week and it was a moving moment.
On this 1st Memorial Day at our nations newest national cemetery, today was about honor, country, sacrifice and to remember and honor those who gave all.

Google has announced that there are robotic cars moseying down the streets in our neighborhoods. I wonder what took them so long. The United States has been flying robotic planes for many years now, such as this one: The Global Hawk was originally built as a Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA). It is now known as an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Personally, I like Remotely Piloted Aircraft better. They are used by both the Navy and the Air Force; they fly high and take cool pictures, like this one: If you're looking for a great real estate agent in San Diego, well, I'm available 24/7, so feel free to contact me by phone or email. In the year 2525....
That airplane is a Global Hawk that was on display at the MCAS Miramar Air Show last weekend. I have no idea who the people are. LOL
As rapidly as technology is moving, I don't think we're going to have to wait until the year 2525....

This is one of a series titled The highlight of the 2010 MCAS Miramar Air Show was the United States Navy's Flight Demonstration Squadron, more popularly known as the Blue Angels. The Blue Angels first performed in 1946 and are currently the oldest aerobatic flight team. They fly the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, which they have been flying since 1986. The F/A-18 Hornet is a supersonic aircraft capable of flying at 1,190 miles per hour (Mach 1.8), slightly faster than my Toyota Camry. It is used by both the Navy and the Marine Corps. This is one of a series titled When you are at an air show, it's easy to get pictures of the planes far away. They seem to be just barely moving. Unfortunately, without something like a 1000mm lens, you won't see the airplane. ♪♫♫♫♪ If you're looking for a great real estate agent in San Diego, well, I'm available 24/7, so feel free to contact me by phone or email. The 2010 MCAS Miramar Air Show:
If the planes go too fast....
Those are the United States Navy's Blue Angels, and they were a couple of miles away taken with a 300mm lens. They are cruising at about 400 miles an hour. If you try to get a picture of a plane zooming by in front of you at 400 miles an hour, this might be what your picture looks like, even if you're leading the plane:
The way to prevent that problem is to switch to sports mode. Depending on your camera, sports mode allows you to take up to four pictures per second. The camera continually focuses while you follow the action, allowing you to get something like this:
If you look closely at the cockpit of the lead plane, you can see a little gold circle. That's the pilot's head... well, his helmet on his head, actually.
